INSECT-GUARD FOR BEDSTEADS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 459,089, dated September 8, 1891.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH MULLER MUL- LER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and aresident of Adorf, in the Duchy of Waldeck, Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety=Bedsteads with Safety-Covers, (for which I have obtained Let ters Patent in the German Empire, No. 42,631, dated December 23, 1887; antedated August 3, 1887,) of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The safety-bedstead with safety-cover invented by me consists in the combination of an iron or wooden bedstead with a cover. The legs of the bedstead and the cover are provided with such safety apparatus as will prevent insects from getting on or in the bed from above or from below, as will be hereinafter desoribed,and asis shown in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is an elevation of the combined bedstead and cover, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, on a smaller scale, of my invention.
I provide the legs of the bedstead with the cup-shaped disks B, in or on which the legs stand. At a certain distance higher up I fix similar disks 0, which, however, are placed in an inverted position and which are of larger diameter than the cups B. On the top of C, I again fix the upright cups D, which are covered by the larger inverted disks or cups E. All the cups B, O, D, and E fit closely to the legs of the bedstead. The upright ones B and D are filled with some glutinous liquid or adhesive oil which does not dry up. The object of this is that an insect which intends to climb up on the legs of the bedstead has to pass through this liquid and there gets limed, if not in the first cup, certainly in the second upright cup D. In order also to prevent insects from getting on a bed from the ceiling by letting itself fall down, I combine with the bedstead an apparatus based 011 the same principle and acting in the same manner as the cups 011 the legs of the bedsteadnamely, the safety cover or hood F. This hood is longer and broader than the bedstead and is of peculiar construction. It is suspended from the ceiling exactly over the bedstead, so that it reaches over the latter on all sides. This hood is provided with the channel G at its outer edges. Near to the channel G, but inside of the hood, I arrange a second one II. This channel must also circumscribe an area larger than the surface space taken up by the bedstead. It is fixed to the hood in such a manner that its lower or outer edge is open, whereas its inner edge fits tightly to the inside of the hood F. I
also fix similar channels I on the outside of the safety-cover near the center of the same, and in the center itself I arrange the cylinder K, which is perforated with Very fine holes, so that the evaporation from below can pass through it. On the top of this cylin der, which may be made about a foot in diameter and of the same length, I put a cover smaller than F, but of similar construction. Its outer circumference is provided with the channel M, and at its inside I arrange the channel N exactly in the same manner as the channel H is fixed to the large cover F. This little hood or cover is closed at/the top and provided with a ring or hook, by means of which the whole safety-cover can be suspended from the ceiling. The channels N, M, I, G, and H are filled with glutinous liquid the same as in the cups B and D, so that the insects which try to get into the bed from above would have to pass at least twice through the adhesive oil, where they would get limed without fail, and so would be killed.
Having now described my invention and the manner in which the same is to be performed, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A safety-bedstead with safety-cover combined, consisting of a bedstead having fitted to its legs cups B C and D E, of which B and D are always upright and filled with a glutinous liquid, whereas C E are inverted, but larger in diameter than the upright cups B D, and of a double cover or hood F, suspended over and being longer and broader than the bedstead, and which is provided with the channels G H I, filled with glutinous liquid,
