FRED H. BROWN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO SIDNEY F. ANDREWS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 459,942, dated September 22, 1891.

Application filed July 15, 1891. Serial No. 399,608. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRED H. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Bands; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The present invention relates to hat bands or linings; and the nature of theinvention is a pliable metallic strip or band made of carbonized steel quite thin to adapt it to be bent into semicircular or curved form, and provided with slots or openings to increase its pliability and enable it to be fitted to heads of different shapes and sizes, said thin metallic band being magnetized with reversed poles at its ends for therapeutical purposes, and being secured in the hat in position to contact with the head of the wearer.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the magnetized band or lining in position by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail View of the band detached from the hat to more clearly show the construction of said band, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the band as bent or curved and ready for insertion into the hat.

Like letters and numerals of reference denote eorresponding parts in the several figures, referring to which- 1 designates the improved therapeutical hat-band, which is made ofa thin strip or piece of carbonized steel, which is magnetized by subjecting it to the action or passage of a current of electricity from a suitable source of electric energy, and thereby providing the band or strip with poles of reverse polarity, (indicated at 2 3 and by the symbols N S.) The band or strip is of suitable length and width to enable it to have proper contact with the forehead of the wearer, and for the purpose of securing pliability of the band or strip and to readily receive and retain magnetism it is madequite thin.

To further increase the pliabil-ity of the band or strip and thus adapt it to be readily bent or shaped to fit hats of different shapes and sizes, I provide longitudinal slots 4:, (one or more,) which are arranged centrally in the band to leave continuous solid sides to the band and avoid weakening the same. One or more perforations or holes 5 are also cut in the band or strip between the longitudinal slots or at the ends of the slots, and, if desired a series of such holes may be cut in the band in lieu of the longitudinal slots, or the slots and perforations may be made alternately in the band.

The pliable perforated band or strip of magnetized steel can be bent to the desired shape and adjusted or fitted to the hat and secured therein by suitable means, so as to be in aposition to contact with the forehead or other part of the head. The pliable magnetized strip may be secured directly to the sweatband of the hat by suitable means, or the strip may be utilized as a part of the sweat-band. The strip also serves to re-entorce or strengthen the hat, and it maybe arranged relatively to the sweat-band so as to leave a space for the circulation of air.

It is found that the magnetized strip or band of perforated steel is useful for therapeutical purposes. The band or strip can be readily bent to the desired shape to fit the head, owing to its flexibility, and the band can then be secured in place by any suitable means.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As a new article of manufacture, a hat-band comprising a thin pliable band of magnetized metal formed with openings or slots to increase its pliability, substantially as described.
