UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

GEORGE H. HILDRETH, OFOINCINNATI, OHIO.

VENTILATOR FOR IVIATTRESSES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,439, dated September 29, 1891.

Application filed June 23, 1891. Serial No. 397,187. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it. known that I, GEORGE H. HILDRETH, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Im proved Ventilator for Mattresses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming apart thereof, in Which- Figure l is a perspective View of a portion of a mattress to which my invention has been applied. Fig. 2 is aplan view. Fig. 3 is aperspective View of one of the ventilators, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in' all the views.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient ventilator for application to mattresses to cause a change of air within the mattress.

My invention consists in a perforated rubber tube furnished with a metallic top and provided with a perforated cover, the said tube being designed for insertion in the body of the mattress from opposite sides at the points Where the mattresses are usually tufted, the ventilators being held in place by the twine used in tufting the mattress.

The ventilator A is formed of a rubber tube a, closed at one end and open atthe otherand provided with perforations b in its sides. The upper end of the tube ct is furnished with a collar c, provided with a transverse slotd, and to the end of the tube is fitted a perforated cover e, of metal or other suitable material, for excludingvermin. AWasherB,of leather or analogous material, is placed under the collar c, and the tubes are inserted in the mattress from opposite sides, as shown in Fig. 1, and are held in place by the twine f, which passes through the mattress over the end of one of the ventilators in the slot d, and thence back through the mattress and over the end of the opposite ventilator in the same Way, being` afterward fastened. The tube a is of suicient length to reach through the layer of cotton which is commonly placed over the curledhair filling of the mattress. The tubes a, being flexible, do not interfere in any way with the efficiency of the mattress.

In case Vthe ventilators are not placed at every point of the tufting the mattress is stitched or tufted With twine in the usual way' at the points Where the ventilators are omitted.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentf l. A mattress-ventilator formed'of a flexible perforated tube closed at one end` provided Ywith a transversely-slotted collar at the opposite end, and aperforated cover, substantially as specified.

2. A mattress-ventilator formed of a Iiexible perforated tube closed at one end, provided With a'transversely-slotted collar at the opposite end, a perforated cover, and a washer fitted to the tube, substantially as specified.

GEO. H. HILDRETH.
