G. HARTIG.
v COMBINED RULER AND PAPER CUTTER. No. 470,754. PatentedMar. 15, 1892.
Wtlness e5.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAV HARTIG, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
COMBINED RULER AND PAPER-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,754, dated March 15, 1892. Application filed February 12, 1892. Serial No. 421,310. (No model.)
.zen of the United States, residing at Washing.
ton city,in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Rulers and Paper-Cutters; and
I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. The invention relates to that class of rulers or combined paper-cutters and rulers whereon is arranged a vertical handle running longitudinally between and parallel to the two opposite edges.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of the blank which has been cutout of a sheet of tin or other metah Fig. 2, a perspective view of the ruler after the metal has been bent into the desired form, and Fig. 3 a vertical section on the dotted line a: ocof Fig. 2 across the ruler. g
In the drawings, A represents the ruler as an entirety with a median longitudinal handle.
The blank shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings is made with one sharp edge a for cutting paper and a hole a, by which it may be hung up when not in use, the sharp edge being fiat on the under side. The metal is first turned on the line a folded fiat, and then raised at the edge to adapt it for use as a ruler. The plate isthen bent on a line a on or near the middle of the ruler until at right angles there'- to, and then folded over a wire at the upper edge to give a good hand-hold.
This ruler is cheap, convenient to handle, durable, and liable to few accidents calculated to mar its usefulness.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is p l. A combined ruler and paper-cutter made of one piece of metal, with the flat sharp cutting-edge a, the double raised edge a for ruling, and the median handle at right angles to the ruler, as shown and described.
2. A ruler formed of a single sheet of metal folded on the line 01?, then turned at right angles on the line a and then folded over a wire at the upper edge, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
