SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,77 5, dated August 16, 1892.

Application filed October 14, 1891- .To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN ALBERT MARVIN, acitizen of the United States, residing at Lans1ng,in the county of Ingham and State of M1chigan,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to trusses, and has for its object the improvement in the manno};i of supporting and adjusting the trusspa My improvements are especially adapted to inguinal and femoral trusses, although part of them may be employed with other forms.

In many forms of trusses the pad is secured to one or more straps that in turn are secured to a single body strap or belt, or the pad is secured directly to the body -belt-. The difficulty experienced in such cases is that the belt slips up or down, especially down, with those persons who have hardly any or slightly-projecting hips, or it becomes disarranged by the motion of the body or legs, thus disturbing constantly the position of the pad and causing great annoyance and pain. To correct this and other difficulties, I employ the combination and arrangement of belt, pads, and straps, as hereinafter described and claimed.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is afront perspective view, and Fig. 2 a back view.

Referring to the drawings, A is a broad flexible back pad composed preferably of leather stitched to webbing and lined with silk. This leather piece is arranged vertically, and is strengthened and stiffened by a central longitudinal piece a of flexible fabric, by a top longitudinal piece a and also by the bottom body-belt E. The piece A is also strengthened and stiffened by a central line of stitching.

To the top back portion of the back pad A and on its opposite sides, is securely pivoted by means of rivets, two adjustable straps B B.

to their front ends are secured by means of loophooks a two V supporting straps O, which extend down from the straps B B and carry and directly support a truss-pad D; but, if preferred, the straps B B may be extended directly down to and be connected to the truss-pad in the same manner as are the straps C.

E is a single body-belt secured to the back pad A below the upper straps B and sepaarated therefrom by a considerable space. This lower strap E is passed directly around the body below the hips and its ends united in front by a loop-buckle b.

F is a perineal band, one end of which is secured by means of a screw-pivot 12 over the ends of the straps O to the truss-pad D, and the opposite end of which is pivoted and permanently secured to a sliding leather loop G on one of the lower straps B. The straps B are passed nearly around the body and supported in position over the hips. noticed that the whole bearing from which the truss-pad is mainly supported is thus thrown on the pad on the back through the upper straps B, which are mostly above the hips,

It will be and by which arrangement the truss-pad is held in place and is not permitted to slide up and down .with the movement of the body and the body-belt. This arrangement, too, combines a direct body-belt and abdominal support with a belt carrying a truss-pad, each performing its separate functions without interference, and yet both united to a common firm comfortable back support.

My improvements are as well adapted to be used with doubletruss-pads by duplicating the straps by which they are connected to the lower abdominal belt, and in such case the advantages of my arrangement in giving support to the pad directly from the back piece will be still more apparent.

What I claim is- In combination with a truss-pad, a central back flexible support or bearing, a single lower body-belt rigidly secured to said hearing and passed entirely around the lower part of the abdomen, unconnected with thetrusspad, with its two ends hooked in front, two

upper body-straps secured to the upper part of said back support and to the truss-pad, and a, perineal strap, one end movably secured to said lower body-belt and the opposite end to the truss-pad, the truss-pad thus held below the body-belt, substantially as described.
