NATHAN COMPTON, OF NEW GARDEN, INDIANA.
FEEDING- APPARATUS FOR SAWMILLS.
To all whom t may concern: Be it known that I, NATI-IAN COMPTON, ofNew Garden, in the county of `Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Giving Feed to Saw Mills; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description. A
The nature of my invention consists in giving the greatest or the least possible impulse, or pressure toward the saw that may be required for the different qualities of timber; with a steadiness and precision which cannot be attained where the notched or toothed wheel is used.
To enable others, skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to .describe its construction and operation.
I construct my ray wheel in the usual form except that I apply to it a hoop or rim, formed of a smooth bar of iron, of an inch square in the place of the notched or indented rim now in common use, as represented on segment marked A. On this rests the principal or feeding hand B, crossing the rim obliquely, and receives the rim or bar into an indentation or notch which is also cut obliquely into the hand; and is faced with cast steel. The left lateral end C, is attached to the wrist at, D, by a spring,A or elastic cord. The hand is moved forward by a sweep attached to the saw sash in the common way. The notch in the hand presses laterally on the rim or bar holding firmly on either side by its bearing position, and moves the wheel forward as the sash rises, and is released or loosened as the sash descends, by the action of the spring or elastic cord, and is so regulated by means of the sweep as to the wheel the degree of impulse required, with minutest precision. The brace hand or dog represented on letter E, is similarly formed, and acts on the same principle, though it need not be connected to the sweep, as the impulse of the wheel forward by the feeding hand loosens or releases the bite, its only use is to hold the wheel firmly and prevent it from receding with the downward mot-ion of the sash.
IVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The application of the new and improved feeding hands, herein described 4to saw mills; acting laterally by a bite on the wheel, and insuring greater pressure and regularity in giving feed to the saw.
NATHAN COMPTON.
