COMBINATION-TOOL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 491,715, dated February 14, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HECTOR J. Mormon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holyoke, in the county of IIampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanyingdrawings,and to the figures of reference marked thereon,which form apart of this specification.

Myinvention relates to certain improvements in combination tools and particularly to that class of such tools which are designed for use by dressmakers and others for drafting garments &c., and its object is to provide a tool of a cheap construction and convenient form wherein shall be combined a tracing or pinking wheel, a tape measure, a pencil and a knife or eraser, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.

In order that my improvements may be the better understood, I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings a combination tool constructed according to my invention, in which drawings Figure 1 is a view of the combination tool complete and Fig.2 is a longitudinal axial section of the same. Fig. 3 is a view of the several parts of the tool detached and Fig. 4 is a View showing the position of the knife when in use.

In the views the handle is shown as composed of two parts or sections 1 and 2, which are secured together by means of a hollow shaft 3, which passes through a longitudinal recess formed in the respective sections and extendsthe entire length of each. Thus it will be seen that the handle is hollow from one end to the other, and in the end of the hollow at one end of the handle, in the portion 1 as seen in Fig. 2, is secured a tracing or pinking wheel 4 of a well known construction, said wheel having a shank engaging said recess and being held in place therein by friction or by means of a cap as clearly seen in the drawings.

One of the portions 2 of the handle is reduced or cut away at 5 nearly into the shaft 3 at its end adjacent the section 1, whereby an annular recess is formed between the two sections. A flat sheet metal hoop or band 6, encircles the ends of the two sections 1 and 2 and slightly overlaps both of them, whereby the annular recess formed by cutting away the forward end of the section 2 is closed. This hoop or band 6 is rigidly secured at its other edge to the section 1 of the handle and has formed in it a narrow transverse slit or opening 7. A tape measure 8 of any kind and length is secured at its inner end to the reduced portion 5 of the section 2 of the handle and has its other end passed through the slit 7 in the band 6v beyond which slit it is provided with a suitable binding or ring to be grasped by the fingers. Thus it will be seen that the section 2 of the handle which is loose on the shaft 3 forms a spool or reel on which the tape measure 8 may be wound by rotating said section on the shaft. The other end of the hollow shaft 3 opposite the tracing wheel forms a convenient socket for the reception of a pencil 9 as seen in Fig. 2, which pencil I prefer to mount in a holder 10 having an annular projecting rib or flange formed on its end to prevent it from being pushed into the hollow of the shaft too far, and the interior of this holder 10 at one end may be provided with screw threads.

12 is an eraser or knife blade provided with an enlarged and rounded shank 13, having an annular circumferential flange 14 about its end, the screw threaded portion of said shank being adapted to screw into the screw threaded end of the pencil holder 10 as will be readily understood, whereby when theknife blade 12 is not in use it may be housed within said pencil holder. WVhen it is desired to use the knife it will be seen that it is only necessary to remove it from the pencil holder 10 and after reversing, secure it therein, pushing the plain end of the shank 13 into the end of the pencil holder until the flange 14 abuts against the end thereof as seen in Fig. at. Or if desired in order to secure a better hold upon the knife it maybe set in the end of the hollow shaft instead of in the end of the pencil holder. It will be also seen that the device can be arranged so that the pencil will stay in the tool by setting the knife in the pencil.

In making the combination tool as above described,l prefer to form the sections 1 and 2 of the handle of wood and enamel them in black or otherwise ornament them, while the band 6 and the other metallic parts will be plated with nickel or other bright metal to give a proper appearance. A

My improved combination tool presents many advantages of chea-pness and general utility over other devices heretofore devised for the purposes for which it isintended, since it combines in a simple and convenient form the four parts which have heretofore, so far as I am aware, only been used separately, whereby great annoyance andinconveuience are caused by dropping or mislaying one or several of them. Further itwill be seen that my invention is capable of many changes and alterations in construction and arrangement and for that reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise construction herein shown. For instance, it is evident that the section 1 of the handle and the band 6 may be formed in one piece, by simply turning out or otherwise recessiug the end of said section and forming the opening 7 in the wall thereof leading into said recess. This construction may in some cases be deemed advisable though I prefer that above described.

Having thus described my invention, I claim;-- I

1. In combination, a handle composed of two sections, each provided with a longitudinal recess, a hollow shaft mounted in said recesses, one of said sections havinga reduced portion and the other section having acavity in its end to receive the reduced portion of the other section and an opening in its wall leading into said cavity, a tape measure secured at one end to said reduced portion and having its other end passed through the opening in the other section, one end of said handle being adapted to receive a tracing wheel in said hollow, and the other end being adapted to receive a lead pencil, substantially as set forth.

2. In combination, a two part handle, one part of which is axially rotatable relatively to the other part, and one of said parts being provided with a perforated annular band, and the other part having a reduced portion fitting within said band and formingtherewith a cavity,and a tape m'easurein said cavity secured to the reduced portion at one end, and projecting through the perforation of the band at the other end, one end-of said handle being adapted to receive a tracing wheel and the other end being adapted 'to receivea lead pencil, substantially as set forth.
