Description

iff/2y@ N.PETERS'. FHOTu-LITHnGRAPMER, WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
EDWIN A. JEFFERY, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN BASKET COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN FRUIT-BASKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,590, dated August 22, 1865.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN A. JEFEERY, of New Haven', in the county ot' New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fruit-Baskets, and I do hereby declare the following', when taken in connection with the accoml'ianying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description ot the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a perspective view; Fig. 2, a vertical central section Fig. 3, asection of the bottom 5 and in Fig. et, the side as bent for attachment to the bottom.
My invention relates to an improvement in the construction of baskets such as are oommonly used for transporting fruit, Sto., tomarket.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct my improved basket, I will proceed to describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I form the bottom A ofany suitable material, round, square, or whatever shape desired, making a groove, a, (see Fig. 4,) entirely around the edge of the bottom. The sides are formed from strips or pieces of veneer B, near the lower end of which lseore the outer surface, so as to allow the veneer to be bent, as seen in Fig. 3, and the end of the veneer thus bent I insert into the groove a of the bottom, as seen in Fig. 2, placing therein the requisite number of pieces to t'orm the sides ot' the basket, then place around the basket, at the bottom, a strip or hoop, C, securing it to the bottom by tacks or other device forcontining the hoop and several strips in their proper position. Other security may be given by tacks through the bottom, as seen in Fig. 2.
The top of the basket I form in the usual manner by placing a hoop or strip, e and f, inside and outside, as seen in Figs. l and 2, securing them by tacks or other device in the usual manner.
I represent my basket as square in form, preferringthisform for many reasons; yet theform ofthe basket is no part ot' my invention.
Having thus 'ully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Constructing the bottom of baskets and securing the sides thereto, substantially as herein set forth.
EDWIN A. JEFFERY.
