To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXIS F. GILLET, of Kearney, in the county of Buffalo and State of Nebraska,have invented a new and useful Improvements in Drafting-Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in drafting instruments and has for an object to provide a simple novel construction by which to aid in setting the ruling edge for drawing close parallel lines as in representing cross sections, screw threads, &c.
The invention consists in peculiar constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a plan view of my improvement as in use. Fig. 2 is a partial end view showing the wheel and its click or pawl. Fig. 3 is a cross section on about line 3-3 Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on about line 4-4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the angle clamping block with its screw shank and Fig. 6 shows the open nut in detail.
In carrying out my invention I provide a base support or rule Awhich is shown as a T square but while the invention is especially designed for use as a T square and it is preferred to employ it in such arrangement or application it is manifest that I do not desire to be limited in the broad features of my invention to such arrangement or use.
The shaft 13 is arranged longitudinally upon the support or rule A and is journaled in bearings C so it may be turned. This shaft is threaded and is provided with a ratchet like wheel D by which it may be turned and which is engaged by a click or pawl 11 to regulate the turning of the shaft in a step by step manner as desired. In the construction shown the wheel has sixteen teeth and the threads of the shaft are eight to the inch so that it will take one hundred and twenty-eight single movements or steps of the wheel to move a part engaged with the screw one inch or each single movement of the wheel will move such part one one hundred and twenty-eighth of an inch. This ratchet wheel and the pawl or click form in connection with the shaft a step by step mechanism for feeding the angle holder presently described along the base support or rule.
The angle holder E is adapted to hold or clamp the angle and is movable along the base support or rule. In the construction shown the holder is formed with a main plate 1 formed to slide along the support or rule and provided with a guide portion e embracing the shaft but not engaging the threads thereof so that the main plate may slide along the shaft and rule or support. The holder also has a nut like portion 3 which is preferably in the nature of a segmental nut section formed at 4 to engage the screw shaft and being movable into and out of such engagement preferably by hinging the section 3 at 5 so it may be set out of engagement with the shaft. ate the nut section into engagement with the shaft and opposing handles 7 and 8 facilitate its adjustment clear of the shaft. When the nut is clear of the shaft the holder with the angle may be moved freely along the support or rule. The plate 1 is provided with an arm 9 projecting beyond the edge of the support or rule and having a slot 10 formed through it.
The clamp section or arm 11 of the holder A spring 6 is arranged to actuis movable transversely of the plate 1 and actuated by a spring 12 which serves to retract the clamp. This clamp has an arm 13 extended over the arm 9 and provided with a slot 14 in register with and narrower than the slot 10. .The clamp block 15 is formed at one side with a spur or rib l6:to fit a notch f in the edge of a specially prepared angle F while its opposite edge is straight to fit the edge of any ordinary angle when the block is reversed.
The block 15 fits below the arm 9 and has at its top a small projecting portion 16 which passes through the slot 10 and laps against the under side of the arm 13 on opposite sides of the slot 14. The screw shank 17 projects up from the clamp block through the slot 14 and is flattened at opposite sides to fit such slot and receives the thumb nut 18 which turns down against the arm 13 of the clamp section. This arm 13 being movable transversely of the holder and being also provided with a slot for the adjustment of the clamp IOO . V Q I turning the wheel one point for each section or thread line such lines may be spaced one one hundred and twenty-eighth of an inch apart, two points will space then one sixtyfourth of an inch apart and so 011. Manifestly the thread or the teeth of the Wheel may be changed to vary the distance the holder will be moved by the movement of the wheel one step or point.
The use of this improvement will enable an amateur to space the section and similar lines with as great accuracy as a skilled, experi- 25 enced draftsman, and it will be found useful to the skilled draftsman in rapidly drawing the lines without regard to the spacing as the improvement enables the spacing to be ac- .complished automatically.
It may be stated thatin Fig. 1 the improved devices are shown about one half the usual size the usual size of the instrument operating 'to move the holder and space the lines one sixty-fourth of an inch apart at each single movement of the wheel.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A draftsmans instrument comprising a base support or rule, an angle holder having a spring actuated clamp section and movable along said base support or rule, and devices by which said holder may be moved along the support or rule substantially as set forth.
2. A draftsmans instrument comprising a base support or rule an angle holder movable along said support and provided with a transversely movable clamp section by which to secure the angle and a step by step feeding mechanism for advancing the holder along the rule substantially as set forth.
3. A T square substantially as described having a head and a blade and provided upon its blade with a j ournaled screw shaft adapted to be turned, and an angle holder movable along the said blade and provided with a threaded bearing engaging said screw shaft and with a clamp section whereby to secure the angle all substantially as and for the purposes described.
4. A draftsmans instrument substantially as described comprising a T square having a head and a blade, a screw extended longitudinally over and j ournaled to said blade and an angle holder movable along said blade and having a threaded connection with the screw whereby the turning of the latter may operate to feed the angle holder along the blade of the T square, substantially as set forth.
5. In a draftsmans instrument substantially as described the combination with the base or support and the screw shaft and the angle holder, of the segmental nut section hinged to the holder and having a threaded bearing to engage the shaft and a handle portion, and a spring by which to actuate the threaded portion into engagement with the screw shaft substantially as set forth.
6. In a draftsmans instrument substantially as described, the combination of the base or support, the screw shaft, the angle holder having a handle 8, and the nut section hinged at 3 and having a threaded section e11- gaging the screw shaft and a handle opposite the handle 8 and a spring by which to adjust the threaded section into engagement with the screw shaft substantially as set forth.
7. An improved draftsmans instrument comprising the shaft and the angle holder having a main plate and a transversely movable clamp section substantially as set forth.
8. Thecombination in a draftsmans instrument, substantially as described of the angle holder main plate provided with an arm 9 having a slot 10 the transversely movable clamp section 13 having a slot 14 in register with the slot 10, the spring for actuating said clamp section and the clamp block connected with the clamp section substantially as set forth.
9. The combination in an instrument substantially as described of the base support or rule the angle holder provided with a transversely movable spring actuated clamp section and devices for moving the holder along the base support or rule substantially as set forth.
10. The combination in an instrument substantially as described of the screw shaft, the angle holder having a tube embracing said shaft and having a transversely movable clamp section and the movable nut section all substantially as set forth.
11. In a draftsmans instrument substantially as described an angle holder provided with a clamp section having a reversible clamp block such block being straight on one edge and provided on its opposite edge with a spur or bead substantially as set forth.
