l To all whom, it may aon/cern,.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. WILLIAMS,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Floors, of which the followingis afull, clear, and exact description, that will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in the art of constructing floors in buildings, and has for its object to deaden the floor structure to prevent the conducting of sound.

The improvement is especially applicable in apartment and fiat-buildings, and may be used in partition walls and wainscoting as well as in the floor structure.

Figure lis a broken-away sectional View in perspective; Fig. 2, a detached detail; and Fig. 3, a modification.

Referring to the drawings, A is the side walls or Wainscoting, B the door proper, C a foundation or bed-Hoor, and D the floor joist.

In carrying out my improvement, thc bedf iioor is fastened to the joists. Ou this floor and in line with the joists are placed, loosely, a number of flooring-strips, E, which are provided in the under side, longitudinally, with a groove, a, in which is .embedded one edge of an elastic strip a; the opposite projecting edge of this elastic strip resting upon the bedfloor, so that the Wooden strips, E, are normally held out of contact therewith. The elastic strips are preferably of rubber, but any other material, suitable for the purpose, may be used. The flooring boards, forming the floor proper, are then nailed or otherwise secured to the upper side of the floor-strips E, thus completing the structure. This arrangement fornis a double Hoor with a space, b, between, in which maybe placed the water, gas, and other pipes. The floor proper not being fastened to the joists may be raised as a Whole by simply removingthe quarter round moldings b. The floor may also b'e constructed in sections so as to permit of a portion being raised to give access to pipes underneath. Itis also obvious that more than one elastic strip may be used in the floor strips and they may -be set transversely instead of longitudinally, as illustrated. Instead of being embedded, the elastic strips may be secured to the surface; as either way would accomplish substantially the same result. The door strips E, lying above the floor and parallel with the floor joists, aiord a more rigid support to the upper floor than if placed in other position, and the entire structure is little liable to vibration.

The modification (Fig. 3.) shows another form of elastic surface; the rubber cushion consisting of a number of spheres, d, partly embedded or seated in the wooden flooringstrips.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The floor structure described, consisting essentially of the joists, a bed floor thereon, flooring strips above said bed floor and horizontally above the door joists, with interposed elastic pieces, and the floor proper resting on and secured to the floor strips, all substantially as described.
