SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,319, dated September 19, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that l, JOSEPH MORGAN MAU- RER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington,in thecountyof Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Obstetrical and Examination Stirrups, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings annexed, Figure l is a perspective View of one of the stirrups applied to the side-rail of a bed; Fig. 2 a transverse section on line 2-2 of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section of the rear portion of the stirrup.
The object of this invention is to provide improved stirrups adapted to be applied to the side-rails of beds and to operating-chairs to assist the physician in vaginal, womb and rectal Operations and examinations, as will be more fully hereinafter described.
I have shown but one stirrup in the drawings but it is of course understood that they are to be used in pairs. The letter a designates a bar curved upwardly at its forward end, to form a foot-rest c', and downwardly at its rear end to form one part, a, of a two part clamp, the bar being preferably formed rectangular in cross-section.
Clamped to the under side of the bar a, near the arm a, is a plate b, which is wider than the bar and is slidably held thereto by a loop c and a bolt d. The plate b is slotted from its rear end forwardly, nearly its entire length, and the two bifurcated parts thus formed are bent downwardly, parallel to the part a, to form the clamping jaws b b. The plate tapers in thickness toward its forward end, and the loop cis secured near its rear end and adapted to closely, but not tightly, embrace the bar. The bolt d passes down through a hole in the bar a and through the slot in plate t) and is tapped into a plate Or bar d extending across the under side of the plate b and tapered in an opposite direction thereto, said bar being provided with a rectangular projection cl tting up into the slot in plate b and serving to assist in guiding and steadying the latter.
The stirrups may be clamped to the siderails ot' beds Or to a convenient portion of surgical or other chairs.
To secure the device to a bed-rail the part a is placed against the inside of the rail with the bar resting on its top and projecting outward from the bed; the sliding part is then adjusted up close against the rail and securely clamped in place' by screwing up bolt d. The patient lies crosswise Of the bed and places her feet in the stirrups, the latter being secured a convenient distance apart. It will be observed that this device is very simple and practical and is eminently useful.
The essential feature Of the device is the manner of securing it to the bed-rail. 1t will be seen that the Oppositely-tapering plates b and d (the latter being clamped stationarily to the bar)` prevent the clamp working forward when'once the bolt is screwed up tightly and the stirrups secured to the rail. It will also be perceived that the slidable plate has but a limited movement on the bar and cannot become displaced or out of position.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is l. The combination of a bar provided with a stirrup at its forward end and a depending arm at its rear end, a slotted plate b seclired to the bar near its rear end and provided with a depending clampingarm,a loop connecting the forward end of the plate to the bar, abolt passed down through the bar and the slot in plate b, and a clamping plate on the lower end of the bolt, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a bar provided with a stirrup and a depending arm, a plate b provided with a slot, open at its rear end, said plate being provided with a depending clamping-arm, a bolt passing down through the bar and the slot in plate b, and a transverse clamping plate carried on the lower lend of the bolt, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a bar provided with a stirrup at one end and a clamping-arm at its other end, a slotted plate clamped to the under side of said bar and provided with a depending clampingarm,said plate tapering toward one end, a clamping bolt passed down through said bar and plate, and a transverse clamping plate on the lower end of said bolt, said plate tapering in the opposite direction from said slotted plate, substantially as described.
