TRIMMING ATTACHMENT FO R SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,342, dated December 5, 1893.
Application filed July 14, 1893.
To all. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. HOLLINGS- WORTH, a resident of Scotland Neck, in the county of Halifax and State of North Carollna, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which 1t appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in sewing machines and more particularly to a trimmin g attachment therefor,the object of the Invention being to produce simple and efficient devices adapted to be attached to a sew ng machine and be actuated by the same, during the operation of sewing, for trimming the edge of the material being sewed.
With this object in view the invention cons1sts in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.

A represents the arm of asewing machine, in the end of which the reciprocating needle bar B and the spring actuated presser bar 0 are located. Secured to the presser bar, below the end of the arm A, is a block D, which is preferably provided in its lower end with recesses a for the reception of the upper end of the presser foot 0', secured to the presser bar. A blade E having a beveled cutting edge 0 is secured to the inner face of. the block D, said blade E projecting downwardly in close proximity to one edge of the presser foot C and passing through an elongated slot din the plate 6, in which slot the blade 1s made to reciprocate vertically, by means which will be presently described, and thus caused to trim the edge of the material being sewed. A sliding block F is mounted on the needle bar B below the end of the arm A and is provided with a screw or pin f adapted to operate in an. elongated slot f in the needle bar. The sliding block F is also provided with a pin or projection 9 adapted to enter and operate in a vertical slot h, in the block D, and on said pin or projection, between Serial No. 480,462. presser bar are at the lower extremities of their throw or movement. As the needle bar moves upwardly, it will pass freely through the block F until the lower end of the slot f reaches the pin or screw f, when said block will be carried upwardly and the pin g made to engage the upper end of the slot h in the block D. As the needle bar continues its upward movement the block D will be made to move upwardly, carrying the blade E upwardly ,through the slot d in the plate 6. When the needle bar moves downwardly the presser bar B will be forced downwardly by its spring B, causing the block D to descend and the blade E to pass down through the slot din the plate 6 and trim the edge of the material being sewed.
My improvements are very simple in construction, not easy to get out of order, and are effectual, in every respect in the performance of their functions.
Slight changes might be made in the de-' tails of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details of construction herein set forth, but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination with the presser bar and needle bar of a sewing machine and a spring for normally forcing said presser bar downwardly, of a blade carried by the presser bar, and a device carried by the needle bar for raising the presser bar and blade carried thereby, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with the presser bar I and needle bar of a sewingmachine, and a spring for normally forcing said presser bar downwardly, of a block secured to said presser bar, a blade carried by said block, and a sliding block mounted on the needle bar and adapted to engage the first-mentioned block and raise it and the blade carried thereby, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with the presser bar and needle bar of a sewing machine and means for normally depressing the presser bar, of a rigid block on said presser bar, a blade carried by said rigid block, and a sliding block carried by the needle bar and having a sliding connection with the said rigid block and adapted to actuate the same to operate the blade, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with a presser bar and a needle bar of a sewing machine, the latter having an elongated slot therein, and means for normally depressing the presser bar, of arigid block carried by the presser bar and having an elongated slot, a sliding block carried by the needle bar and having a projection to enter the elongated slot in the rigid block, a pin or screw carried by the sliding block and adapted to enter the elongated slot in the needle bar, and a blade carried by said rigid block, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination with a presser bar and a needle bar of asewing machine, and an arm carrying said bars, of a rigid block carried by the presser bar, a blade carried by said block, means carried by the needle bar for moving said rigid block vertically, and a plate secured to said arm and provided with an elongated slot for the accommodation of a pin projecting from said rigid block, substantially as set forth.
