SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,477, dated January 30, 1894.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES FREDRIOK BETTMANN, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at New Albany, in the county of Floyd and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Fan Attachment for Rocking-Ohairs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to fan-attachments for rocking-chairs, and it has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficientdevice capable of attachment to any ordinary rocking-chair, and provided with means for adjustment whereby the fan may be arranged at the desired elevation irrespective of the height of the back of the chair 5 and furthermore, to provide means whereby the attachment can be readily disconnected from the chair when not required.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fan attachment embodying my invention, applied in the operative position to a rocking-chair. Fig. 2 is a detail View in perspective of the clutch for holding the fan. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the supporting yoke. Fig. 4 is a similar view of one of the clips employed for the attachment of the rear terminals of the yoke to the back of the chair. Fig.5 is a similar view of a slightly modified form of clip. I designates a supporting yoke, which is substantially V-shaped in plan, having the forwardly-convergent arms 2, which are connected by the intersecting braces 3. The arms of the supporting yoke are concavoconvex in cross-section, are bowed in shape in order to extend over the head of the occupant of the chair, and are provided withvertical extensions 4, at their rear ends, to be received in the clips 5, which are attached to the back of the rocking-chair. When the rocking-chair is provided at the top of its back with a cross-bar 6, as shown in the drawings, the clips may be provided with perforated plates 7, to be secured to said bar by screws 8, and when the rocking-chair is not provided with such a cross-bar the clips must be secured to the uprights of the back, and for thispurpose are provided with clamping-rings 9, as shown in Fig. 5. The clips are provided with vertical sockets 10, which are semicylindrical in cross-section or are provided with flat inner sides and rounded outer sides, and set-screws 11 are fitted in threaded perforations 12 in the outer sides of the socket portions of the clips and are adapted to impinge at their inner ends upon the convex faces of the vertical extensions of the arms of the yoke, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The pressure of the set-screws upon the convex surfaces of said extensions tends to flatten the latter and thus bind more firmly within the sockets of the clips, said extensions, as Well as the arms of the yoke, being struck from sheet-metal.
Arranged between the front terminals of the arms of the yoke is a swivel 13', which is rotatably secured in place by means of pivotscrews 14, which extend through perforations in the extremities of the arms and engage threaded sockets in the ends of the swivel. In connection with the swivel I employ a weighted clamp or holder 15, which is provided with a stem 16 to fit a diametrical socket 17 in the swivel, such stem being held at the I desired adjustment by means of a set-screw 18, fitting in a threaded radial perforation 19, in the swivel and impinging against the surface of the stem. The weighted clamp or holder comprises a weight 20, and oppositelydisposed spring-jaws 21, which are firmly secured by rivets or other securing devices to the opposite sides of the weight and are capable of free relative adjustment at their lower ends. These jaws are adapted to approach each other below the lower end of the weight and are perforated to receive an adj usting screw 22, which extends loosely through'one of the jaws and is provided with a shoulder 23 to bear against the outer surface thereof and engages a threaded socket 24 in the other jaw. This adj listing-screw extends loosely through a transverse perforation 25 in the weight in order to give sta bility to the structure.
From the above description it will be understood that the yoke is capable of vertical adjustment by loosening the set-screws of the clips and raising or lowering the vertical extensions in the sockets of the clips; and furthermore, that the weighted clamp-holding stem is capable of vertical adjustment in the socket of the swivel to bring the fan in the desired proximity to the face of the occupant of the chair.
In operation, the rocking movement of the chair causes the weighted stem to swing forwardly and rearwardly in synchronism with the vibration of the chair. The fan which is shown at 26 is engaged between the free ends of the jaws of the clamp or holder.
It will be understood that in practice various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this in- Vention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The.combination of clips having sockets, and means for securing the clips to the back of a chair, a supporting yoke having concaveconvex bars fitting slidably in the sockets of the clips, set-screws intersecting the sockets of the clips and arranged to impinge against the convex surfaces of the bars of the yoke, whereby said bars may be spread laterally to bind them firmly in the sockets, and a swinging weighted clamp supported by the yoke and adapted to carry a fan, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with clips having sockets and provided with means for attachment to the back of achair, a supporting yoke havin g vertical portions fitted in said sockets and adapted to be engaged by set-screws carried by the clips, and a swivel mounted in the yoke, of a clamping device comprising a stem adj ustably fitted in a socket of the swivel, a weight secured to the lower end of said stem, spring-jaws 21 arranged upon opposite sides of the Weight and extending below the lower end thereof where they approach each other to engage a fan, and a shouldered adjustingscrew engaging registering perforations in the jaws and extending through a transverse perforation in the weight, substantially as specified.
3. A fan attachment for rocking-chairs, comprising clips 5 provided with vertical sockets 10 and set-screws 11 fitting in perforations intersecting said sockets, a supporting yoke 1 having forwardly-convergent arms 2 connected by intersecting braces and provided at their rear ends with vertical portions fitting in said sockets 10, a swivel arranged between the front extremities of the arms 2 and provided with a diametrical socket 17 and a set- CHARLES FREDRICK BETTMANN, JR.
