SHOE-LACING FASTEN ER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,844, dated March 6, 1894.

Application filed September 20,1893. Serial No. 486,009. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. SIMMONS, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Lacin g Fasteners, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation showing my improved fastener in use; Fig. 2 a side elevation of the fastener detached and open and Figs. 3 and a respectively views of the clasp members.

Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the difierent figures of the co drawings.

My invention relates especially to a device for fastening the ends of a shoe lacing obviating the necessity of tying the usual bow knot and preventing the lacing from acciz 5 dentally loosening; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simple, cheap and elicctive device of this character.

The nature of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation: In the drawings, A B represent the clasp members, the member, A, being bent slightly downward at, b, forming a lip, f, in which there is a laterally arranged slot, g, of size suitable to receivea hook, h,'on the shoe. At the opposite end of the member, A, there are two lugs or cars, '5. The member, B, is pivoted in said cars at, j. Said member has a 40 downwardly projecting flange, it, under said pivot as in Fig. 2 between the cars which extends sufficiently far to bite the lacing, 0, passed thereunder between said ears as hereinafter described.

Teeth, m, are struck up from the member, B, as many of said teeth being employed as deemed desirable. The outer teeth, m, engage the member A, when the clasp is closed.

' In the use of my improvement the fastener is adjusted on one of the hooks, h, on the shoe by inserting said hook in the slot g, and one end of the lacing is passed under the pivot and flange, k, longitudinally over the face of the member, A. The opposite end of the lacing is then passed transversely over the face of the member, A, and the member, B, being turned downward said ends are held respectively by the teeth, m, and-the flange, 7c. The ends of the lacing can then be tucked into the top of the shoe and any strain desired may be imparted to the lacing which will be socurely held by the clasp.

When not in use and the shoe is unlaced the fastener is left on thelacing and detached from the hook.

Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is-- The herein described fastener comprising the members, A B, the member, A, being provided with the transversely slotted-lip, f, and 7c ears, '5, and the member, B, being pivoted in said ears and provided with the downwardly projecting flange, is, under said pivot and with the teeth, in, all being arranged to operate substantially as described.
