0 MAGTAGGART GIRDER CLAMP AND HANGER.
NlTE STATES ATENT Front iGlRDER CLAMP AND HANGER.
$PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,707, dated March 12, 1895.
Application filed January 30, 1894.
To (0 whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES MACTAGGART, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and-county of Philadelphia,State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Girder Clamps and Hangers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in girder clamps and hangers, and consists of the combination of parts as will be hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims;
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a girder clamp and hanger embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a partial side elevation and partial vertical section of a detached portion thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings: A, A designate hangers or clamps, which are adapted to embrace the flange of the beam B. Connected or formed with the hanger A is a bar 0, which passes freely through the other hanger A, and also through the opening D in the head E, to which is screwed or otherwise attached the depending rod F. On the hanger A isa set-screw G, which is adapted to enter either of the openings H in the bar 0, the upper edge of said bar having notches or grooves .l thereon to receive the tooth K on the upper wall of the opening D in the head E, it being evident that the clamps may be readily adjusted to the width of the beam, and as there is a deep space D below said bar, the head may have a vertical play so as to be raised and thus clear the tooth K from the notch J which it occupied, so that said head may be moved to the right or left, and the tooth seated in the adjacent notch, the head thus being adjusted between said clamps, so that the rod F may be properly located it being evident that when the parts are adjusted, they readily retain their position.
The bar 0 is angular in cross section and the openings in the clamp A and head E are also angular so thatsaid head and clamp will not overturn in applying the device to the beam B, it being evident that as such appli- $erial No. 198,448. (No model.)
cation is overhead, the overturning of said clamp and head would be a matter of great inconvenience and labor which it is desirable to avoid, and this is accomplished by the angular features stated, it being also evident that as the head E is non-rotatable, the rod F is'prevented from swinging.
On the rod F are arms L, which are formed with openings M, the walls of which have bosses thereon, thus forming enlarged bearings for wires, &c., passing through said arms.
The arms L may be vertically adjusted, and they provide means for supporting water, gas, or other pipes, electric conductors, wires, &c.
The lower arms L have notched ends for attachment of a chain N, which latter forms a loop to support a pipe, 820., therein, said loop being adjustable by attaching the proper links on said arms, so that pipes, &c., of different diameters may be supported therein.
As the pipes, 860., supported on the arms may expand and contract, I provide for the consequent movement of the same by means of rollers P, which are journaled on the upper sides of said arms, and have the pipes, 850., resting thereon, the effect of which isevident. The arms which carry said rollers P have a screw-threaded boss for connection with the rod F, so that a partial vertical adjustment of said arms may be made, while pipes, &c., are supported thereon, without displacement of said pipes, 850., the rollers preventing any binding of the parts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The clamp-carrying bar C,in combination with the head E having horizontal and vertical openings therein, the horizontal opening receiving the bar, and havinga deep vertical space below the same, the tooth K depending from the upper wall of said opening adapted to engage either of the notches of said bar, and the depending rod F secured in the vertical opening of said head, said head being vertically movable on said bar, owing to said space, so as to raise said tooth clear of the notch it occupies, for lateral adjustment of said head and subsequent interlocking of the same with said bar, the said bar 0 and the openings in the clamp A and the head E being angular zontal roller journaled on the upper side of in cross section, and the parts named oomsaid arm, said parts being combined sub- IO billed substantially as described. stantially as described.
2. In a irder clamp and ban "er a support *1 y a rod degending therefrom, and having 5 OHARLEb MAOTAGGARP' screw-thread thereon, an arm with a screw- WVitnesses: threaded boss vertically adjustable on the JOHN A. WIEDERSHEIM,
threaded portion of the said rod, and a hori- A. P. JENNINGS.
