. I v Q UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM THOMPSON, OF FREMONT, OHIO.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,931, dated March 19, 1895. Application filed December 8, 1894- Serial No. 531 ,264. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:-
Be itknown that 1, WILLIAM THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination-Tool, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of this invention is to provide a pipe or rod wrench, in which the force applied to turn the pipe or rod will be utilized to grip it, thereby causing the hold on the pipe or rod to tighten with the increasing offort to turn it.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench having the aforesaid advantages and in combination a supplemental wrench, which can be used as pliers or the like, the said supplemental wrench being operated by the movable handle of the pipe or rod wrench.
Furthermore, in combination with the wrench the object is .to produce a tool which can be used as a wire cutter and as abolt and nut wrench, with the ends of the handles forming a screw driver and nail extractor.
Furthermore, the object of the invention is to produce in combination with the aforesaid tools a hammer, which can be used for heavy or light work.
In obtaining the objects above set forth, it is also my purpose to produce a combination tool which will possess advantages in points of durability, efficiency and general utility, making it at the same time comparatively in expensive to manufacture.
With thisand other objects in view, the invention consists in the various novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts, to be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification, wherein like numerals indicate corresponding parts in theseveral views, in which- Figure l, is a view in elevation of one side of my improved wrench. Fig. 2, isa similar view of the opposite side thereof. Fig. 3, is a detail view in perspective of the movable jaw. Fig. 4, shows detail views of the ends of the handles.
In the drawings 1 denotes the movable handle of the wrench having its upper end rounded, as at 2, with its end presenting a surface, 2*, which is used as a hammer. The rounded end 2, is serrated to insure a firm hold. This movable handle is pivoted to the stationary handle 3, at 4, and is further provided with a recess 5, which forms a shoulder, whereby the movable jaw of the supplemental wrench (to be hereinafter referred to) is actuated.
The stationary section of the wrench consists of the handle 3, which has an integral extension 6, with an overhanging curved lip 7, forming the seat in which the pipe or rod rests when operated upon. Below the seat for the rod is a C-shaped recess 7, which in conjunction with the recess 7 forms the wire cutter, as will be apparent.
The shoulder 8 in the stationary handle, in combination with the shoulder 8 of the movable handle forms the jaw by which a nut or the head of a bolt may be turned.
The supplemental wrench, or pliers, are formed by the serrated extension 7 and a movable jaw 10, pivoted at 11; said movable jaw having also a lug 12, which fits against the shoulder formed by the recess 5 (heretofore referred to) of the movable handle, whereby it is actuated.
A spring 13, is interposed between the stationary and movable supplemental jaws, and are thereby held normally apart.
The ends of the handles are formed to be used as a screw driver 14., and a tack extractor 15, and as the handle of the wrench is strong these features will be unusually serviceable.
In View of the numerous results obtained by this combination, it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the minor details of construction, and yet the spirit of the invention will not be departed from.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is=- 1. In a wrench, the combination with abody having an overhanging curved lip forming a seat anda stationary jaw, a pivotal handle having a rounded serrated upper end, said handle having a recess formed therein to form a shoulder and a supplemental jaw actuated thereby, substantially as described.
2. In a wrench the combination with the body having an overhanging curved lip forming a seat and a stationary jaw, a C-shaped.
recess below the seat, a pivotal handle having a rounded, serrated, upper end and a recess coinciding with the recess of the body, to form a wire cutter, said handle being further cut away to form a shoulder, a supplemental jaw having a lug which abuts against the shoulder, and diagonal shoulders on the pivotal and stationary sections forminga wrench, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM THOMPSON.
