RUBB ER TIP AND POINT-PROTECTOR FOR LEAD-PENCILS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,935, dated April 2, 1895.

Be it known that I, FRANK MOINTYRE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rubber Tips and Point-Protectors for Lead-Pencils and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
The device in which my invention is comprised, consists of a metallic sleeve or tube, upon the exterior of and surrounding which is mounted a tablet or disk of rubber or erasive material, of angular, circular, or other desired contour, fastened in place by being held between washers which are fitted on and secured to the tube upon opposite sides of the erasive tablet.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a perspective View of a'pencil provided with a tip embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal axial section of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, and Fig. 4 is an axial section of a modification.
Referring to the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2 which is a tip intended to be placed on the uusharpened end of a lead pencil, A is the lead pencil, B is a sheet metal tubular tip to fit on the end of the pencil, and O is the tablet of rubber or other erasive material. This tablet in the present instance is of circular contour, and is annular in structure, beingof a size to fit snugly upon the exterior of the tubular metal tip 13, where it is held by annular metallic dished or concavo-convex sheet metal washers a which press it tightly between them I with their outer and biting annular edges taking a firm hold upon the rubber tablet. The
inner washer is first put on and is held in the desired place by solder or other suitable means. In this instance and preferably it is held by means of an annular externally projectiug shoulder or head 5 on the sheet metal tip, against which the washer abuts. The tablet 0 is then fitted on the tip and'pushed up to the inner washer a; then the outer washer a is put on and forced up against the tablet so as to bind the latter firmly between the two washers, and then the outer end of the tip is swaged down as at 0 so as to hold the parts firmly in place-the outer washer being forced most firmly against the rubber tablet by and during the swaging operation.
The outer end of the tip B may be closed by a head 01 formed in one with or suitably attached to the body of the tip or it may be 7 left open as preferred. In the case of a simple tip it is preferred to close its outer end by the head d.
By elongating the tubular body of the tip, it can be used as a point protector as Well. This is illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4:. In this modification, the body of the tip shown at D is elongated to form a point protector, and at the proper place is provided preferably with an annular internally projecting bead e to limit the extent to which the pencil point can be inserted. The device can at will be fitted upon the sharpened or unsharpened end of the pencil. The erasive tablet (in this instance of rectangular contour) is fitted and held upon the outer end of the sheet metal tube in the same way as in Figs. 1 and2. The outer end of the tube however in this instance is open and adapted to receive a reversible pen holder or pen tip E which is shown in Fig.3, as fitted into the point protector pen foremost, and-in Fig. 4 as turned pen outermost and withdrawn from the point protector.
As a penholder the device has the advantage of preventing the pen from being inserted too far into the inkstand, and of holding the pen up when the device is laid down upon a desk.
Having described my invention and the manner in which the same is or may be can ried into effect, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A rubber tip for lead pencils and the like consisting of a sheet metal tube, an erasive tablet O fitting upon and surrounding the 0 tube, and the metallic annular washers a fitted upon and secured to the tube and forcibly compressing from opposite sides the tablet O, cured to the tube as hereinbefore shown and between them, as herein shown and described. described. 10
