I FILTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of 'Iretters Patent No. 5463322, dated August 6, 1895.

To all whom; it may concern:

Be it known that I, MINERVA R. BUOKLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cherry Vale, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in that class of rain-water filters which comprise a casing and one or more foraminous drawers adapted to be readily removed and discharged of the vermin and trash which they collect; and its novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claim, when taken in connection with the annexed drawing, in which the figure is a perspective view of my improved filter in an operative position, with a portion of the casing broken away and the door open. 7

Referring by letter to said drawing, A indicates the casing of my improved filter, which is made of sheet metal in the form or approximate form illustrated. This casing A comprises the upper chamber a and the lower chamber 17, as shown, and it is provided with apertured lugs 0, whereby it may be readily attached to the side of a house or the like, and is also provided at its upper and lower ends with pipe-sections d e, through the medium of which it may be connected to a downspout and to a pipe leading to a cistern or other receptacle. 7

The upper chamber a of my filter has .its front open and designed to be closed by a hinged door B, and it is provided upon the inside of its side walls with two pairs of ledges f g, which are designed for the engagement of the flanges h of the drawers 0 D. These drawers 0 D are designed to catch all insects, vermin, and trash which comes down the down-spout, so as to prevent the same from getting in and contaminating the filtering material in the chamber b, and they are similar in construction, with the exception that the upper drawer O is provided with a foraminated bottom'i to catch the larger vermin and pieces of trash, while the drawer D has a bottom j of wire screen designed and adapted to catch such insects, vermin, and trash as pass through the bottom iof the'drawer C.

By reason of the door B ready access may be had to the chamber a, and it will there- The said filtering material Z may be charcoal or any other suitable substance, and by reason of the drawer D being removable it will be seen that ready access may be had to the material through the front of the chamber a, and said material may be conveniently removed and replaced by new material when necessary, which is an important advantage.

When my improved filter is in use, the water coming down the down-spout is compelled to pass first through the bottomi of the drawer O, which catches all the largeinsects and pieces of trash, then through the bottom j of the drawer D, which relieves it of all the small insects and pieces of trash, and then through the filtering material in the chamber b, which removes all the fine particles of mud and other impurities. Thus the water which goes to the cistern is rendered clean and pure, and the frequent cleaning of the cistern, caused by the dirt and filth collecting therein, is obviated, which is a desideratum.

It will be appreciated from the foregoing that in addition to being cheap, simple, and efficient, my improved filter is capable of being readily placed in position and as readily removed, and is therefore especially adapted for the use of persons who rent houses and who are compelled by circumstances to move frequently.

1 do not desire to be understood as claiming a filter comprising a casing and removable drawers having screen or foramiuated bottoms, as I am well aware that the same is old; but

\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The herein described rain water filter, consisting essentially of the casing A, formed of sheet metal and provided with lugs c, for attachm cut to a building and having the upper chamber a, of rectangular form in cross section, the front of which is open and the lower chamber b, of rectangular form in cross sec tion communicating with chamber a, and having flat side walls inclined inwardly and extending downwardly from the side walls of the chamber a, and also having the horizontal ledges f, g, on the side walls of the chamher a, and a door to close the front thereof,

the removable drawer 0, arranged in the chamber a, and having lateral flanges to engage the ledges f, and also having a foraminons bottom, the removable drawer D, arranged in the chamber at, below the drawer O, and having lateral flanges to engage the ledges g, and also having a screen bottom, the foraminated or screen support 70, arranged in the chamber b, adjacent to the lower end thereof and filtering material placed upon the foraminated or screen support, all as and for the purpose set forth.
