Description

(No Model.) 2 Sheets-Sheet 1.. GSA. GORDON.
VEGETABLE CUTTER. No. 558,063. I Patented Apr. 14, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. GORDON, OF BONNER SPRINGS, KANSAS.
VEG ETABLE -CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,063, dated April 14, 1896.
Application filed July 22, 1896. Serial No. 556,774. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern:
. citizen of the United States, residing at Bonner Springs, in the county of Wyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inVegetable-Outters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to vegetable-cutters, and more particularly to devices for cutting potatoes in proper shapes for cooking and planting.
The object of the invention is to provide a cutter which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, and comparatively inexpensive of production.
With these objects in view the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of my improved vegetable-cutter. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective of one of the cutting-cylinders removed from the frame. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken longitudinally through the aXis of the same. Fig. 4c is a detail perspective of one of the longitudinal cutting knives. Fig. 5 is a similar view of one of the circular cutting-knives, and Fig. 6 is a view of the adjustable longitudinal dividingknife.
In the drawings, 1 represents the supporting-casing, having at its upper end a feedhopper 2 and at its lower end a discharge-tube 3. Journaled upon shafts 4, mounted in bearings of the frame, are two cutting-cylinders 5. Each of these cylinders consist of circular knives 6, having in their peripheries, at equal distances apart, notches 7, and being provided with spokes 8 and hubs 9, by means of which they are keyed to the shaft aforesaid.
Extending at right angles to the circular knives are longitudinal knives 10, which have notches 11, which correspond to and fit into the notches of the circular knives. The inner circular knife, instead of being provided with notches, is provided with an aperture 12, which receives the inner tenoned ends 13 of the longitudinal knives, while their outer ends an adjustable longitudinal knife 17.
fit between parallel lips 14:, which project from the inner side of a gear-wheel 15, which is keyed upon the shaft, and split pins 16 serve to hold the longitudinal knives between the lips. The gear-wheels of the two cuttingcylinders mesh, and one of the supportingshafts is provided with a crank 16, by turning which the cutting-cylinders will be rotated in opposite directions toward each other, as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1.
Immediately above the point where the cutting-cylinders nearly approach each other is As shown in the drawings, this knife is made adjustable by a set-screw 18, but any other suitable means may be employed.
Arranged upon each of the shafts of each of the cutting-cylinders between the hubs of the circular knives are spacing-sleeves 20, which serve to hold the knives spaced apart and prevent them becoming displaced or out of proper relation with each other. Shoulders 21 are formed near the outer ends of each of the shafts at the inner side of the casing, and washers 22 and nuts 23 are placed upon the inner ends of the shafts, by means of which the circular knives may be firmly clamped between said washers and shoulders and the parts firmly held together.
In operation the vegetables to be out are placed into the hopper and are fed directly to the cylinders. The longitudinal knives of the cylinders will cut the vegetables longitudinally, while the circular knives will cut them transversely. The central adjustable knife will also give the vegetables an additional longitudinal cut, so that there will be no liability of a potato passing through the machine without being properly sliced.
The device is exceedingly simple, and will be found to be very useful in preparing vegetables for cooking purposes for hotels. and large boarding-houses, for which it is particularly adapted.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and construction of the invention will be readily understood without requiring further explanation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a vegetable-cutter, the combination with a main frame or casing, of rotary cutters mounted therein, and consisting of longitudinal knives arranged in the general form of a 7 cylinder, and circular knives secured to said edges, While the innermost knife is provided with apertures, a gear-wheel having parallel lips projecting inwardly therefrom, longitudinal knives having notches in their lower edges, which engage the notches of the circular knives, and provided with a tenon which proj ects through the apertures in the inner knife, the outer ends of said longitudinal knives being located between the lips of the gear-wheel and split pins for securing them thcreinbetween, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 30 in presence of two witnesses.
