' To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. MCCAUS- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Means for Eifecting the Removal of Hides from Oarcasses, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide means whereby water, air, or other fluid under pressure can be effectively employed for the removal of hides from carcasses. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a device embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is an end view of the same looking in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1. The device is intended for application to the tail of the carcass, and comprises a tube F, intended to be inserted between the flesh and hide of the tail, the hide being then firmly secured to the outside of the tube prior to forcing the water, air, or other fluid into the outer end of the tube, said fluid finding its way between the hide and flesh of the carcass, commencing at the tail, and any rearward escape of the fluid being prevented owing to the fact that the hide of the tail is rigidly confined to the outer surface of the tube F. Hence the tail is practically sealed at the end.

The means shown in the present instance for effecting the securing of the hide of the tail to the tube F consist of a ring f, which is slipped over the tail before the insertion ofthe tube F, said tube having, by preference, an annular rib or protuberance f, so as to prevent the ring f from slipping down on the tail after the tube has been inserted between the flesh and hide of the same. To this ring f is connected one end of a cord or rope g, the other end of said rope being connected to a ring h, which is free to turn on the projecting end of the tube F,and is retainedin position by means 'of a suitable spring-pawl 'i, which engages with ratchet-teeth formed on the ring h, so that when the latter is turned the coils of rope g, extending from the ring it to the ring f, will be tightened upon the hide of the tail to any desired extent, the loosening of the coils being prevented owing to the engagement of the pawl 'i with the ratchet-teeth of the ring 72.

When cold water is used as the fluid agent for effecting the removal or loosening of the hide, it also has a refrigerating effect, and is therefore preferred as a means of loosening or removing the hides of carcasses of cattle or sheep in cases where the flesh is intended for market.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As a means for loosening or removing the hides of carcasses, the combination of a tube adapted to be inserted between the flesh and the hide on the tail of the carcass, a fixed ring, and a ring free to turn on the tube, with a cord or rope connected at one end to the fixed ring, and at the opposite end to the movable ring, substantially as specified.

2. As a means for loosening or removing the hides of carcasses, the combination of a tube adapted to be inserted between the flesh and the hide of the tail of the carcass, a fixed ring, a ring free to turn on the tube, a cord or rope connected at one end to the fixed ring, and at the opposite end to the movable ring, and a pawl-and-ratchet device for preventing back movement of said movable ring, when the rope is tightened.

3. As a means of loosening or removing the hides of carcasses, the combination of a tube adapted to be inserted between the flesh and hide on the tail of the carcass, and having an external rib or projection, and a ring adapted to slide over the tail outside of the hide and held in place by said rib, a ring free to turn on the tube, and a cord or rope connected at one end to the fixed ring, and at the opposite end to the movable ring, substantially as specified.
