FACE-STEAM I NG APPARATUS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,587, dated November 17, 1896.

Be it known that I,Osoan A. WEIssnnBonN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Face-Steaming Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to apparatus to be used for the purpose of subjecting the face of a person to the action of a steam or vapor bath, with aview to cleanse the pores of the skin and thus beautify the complexion; and it consists of certain novel features of construction tending to produce various advantageous results in the use of the apparatus, as will be hereinafter more fully described.

Hy invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of the apparatus as it appears when in use. Fig. ll represents a side view of the apparatus looking in the direction of the opening of the face-inclosiug hood. Fig. III represents a horizontal section of a portion of the apparatus, taken approximately on the line m, Fig. I. Fig. IV represents a vertical central section of a portion of the apparatus intended to receive the medicament detached.

Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in each of the figures.

The letter A indicates a vessel of sheet metal or other similar material, and in this example of cylindrical shape, constituting the body of the apparatus. This vessel A, which may be denominated the steaming vessel, has a perforated false bottom B and a central steam-outlet tube 0, rising from said false bottom therein, this tube thus communicating with the space between said false bottom and the main bottom of the vessel. On the upper edge of the steaming vessel A is formed a flaring mouth A, and surmounting this month is a hood E, of muslin or other fibrous or textile material, in which hood is formed an opening F of a proper size and shape to permit the entrance of the head of a person and also usually one of the hands into the hood in the operation of subjecting the face of the person to the action of the steam arising in and from the steaming vessel. The hood E is in practice attached to the mouth of the steaming vessel A, and it is of suitable dimensions to accommodate the head of the person, while it is closed at every point except as to the face opening F, so that inasmuch as the only escape afi'orded to the steam is through the faceopening a very effective action thereof upon the skin of the face is produced.

The steaming vessel A rests on a base G, which in this example is provided with a lamp II for h eating the Water supplied to the steaming vessel A for the purpose of generating the desired steam.

lxtending; through the side of the steaming vessel A is'a tube J, which may be of sheet metal or other like material and which has an npwardly-extending branch J, of indiarubber or other flexible material, terminating at a point within the face-hood E, where it is provided with a mouthpiece A This tube J is intended to be used for the purpose of enabling the user of the apparatus to inhale fresh air from a point exterior thereof while the head of the person is enveloped in the face-hood E, as indicated in Fig. I, and hence the tube constitutes a breathing device for the person using the apparatus.

The parts or sections J J J of the breathing-tube are connected to the body of the steaming vessel A and to each other in such a manner as to render this tube detachable from the steaming vessel for convenience of transportation of the apparatus, and the exterior part J of the tube is usually made of considerable length in order to bring the outer end or mouth thereof to a comparatively long distance away from the steaming vessel A, and thus lessen the effect of the heat radiatin g from the vessel on the air flowing inward and upward through the tube.

One of the purposes of the perforated false bottom B is to promote a circulation of the water supplied to the steaming vessel A therein, namely, through the holes in said false bottom, and with a tendency to fzeicilitate or hasten the generating of steam.

In order to permit of increasing the effect of the steam on the skin of the face, I have introduced into the steaming vessel A a holder or receptacle K for a medicament of a volatile nature and which in its evaporation shall carry its fumes with and commingle with the steam entering the face-hood E, the medicament thus coacting with the steam in its ac tion on the face. This medicament-holder K is more fully illustrated in Fig. IV of the drawings, wherein the letter K indicates the main or body portion thereof, K a perforated partition therein with a central vertical ring for receiving and containing the desired in edicament, and a capK with a central hole or opening for the escape of the steam through the holder.

In the use of the apparatus the steam passes upward through the perforations of the partition K, thence over the medicament contained within the riu g upon said partition and thence through the opening in the cap K, so that the steam becomes impregnated with the fumes of the medicament before it is re ceived in the face-hood.
