T. J. PALMER. EXTENSION DESK.
No. 575,729. Patented m. 26,11897.
7 C 4: Wuewwamd C I. I I i %@M% UNITED STATES ATnNT Grinch.
THEODORE .I. PALMER, OF IIACKENSACK, NEIV JERSEY.
EXTENSION-DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 575,729, dated January 26, 1897.
Application filed May 27, 1896. Serial No. 593.272. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, THEODORE J. PALMER, of Hackensack, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Extension-Desks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is more especially intended for the desks of what are known as musicpulpits. Its object is to provide a desk which may be extended to a width sufficient for the music-sheets of two performers playing together, but which when used bya single performer may be brought and kept within the width of an ordinary single desk.
I will first describe in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings a music-pulpit desk embodying my invention and will afterward point out its novelty in claims.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the desk, showing it closed for a single performer. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the desk partly extended. Fig. 3 is a back View showing the desk completely extended. Fig. at is a back view corresponding with Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference designate corre sponding parts in all the figures.
A is a desk-board like that of an ordinary music pulpit, having its lower edge constructed or provided with the usual fixed return a for the support of the music sheet or box.
B B are two extension-flaps so hinged, as shown at b b in Figs. 1 and 3, to the side edges of the board as to be capable of being folded flat upon the board A above the return a, as shown in Fig. 1, or of 'being extended or spread laterally therefrom, as shown in Fig. 3.
O O are return-pieces for forming extensions or prolongations of the return a. These extension return-pieces are hinged, as shown at c c in all the figures, to the ends of the return a of the board A in such manner as to be capable of being folded closely under the return a, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, or of being spread lengthwise and outward therefrom, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
On the backs of the return-pieces 0, near the outer ends thereof, are pivoted hooks d 01. These hooks may engage either, as shown in Fig. 3, with studs or pins 6 e on the backs of the flaps or, as shown in Fig. 4, with studs or pins f f on the back of the board A. The
engagement of the said hooks with the pins 6 6 serves to lock the extended flaps B and the extended return-pieces O 0 together and so retain the desk in its extended condition. The engagement of the said hooks with the pins ff secures the return-pieces snugly under the return a of the board A.
I11 carrying out this invention I propose generally to make the fixed return a of the desk-board A with a somewhat greater projection from the face of the said board than is common, in order that when the flaps b are folded over on the board, as shown in Fig. 1, the return will have the necessary projection beyond the said flaps for the support of the music book or sheet. The return-pieces may be of a width to correspond with the fixed return a.
The extension-desk constructed as above described may be supported in any suitable manner, for example, in a substantially similar way to that in which the desks of other music-pulpits are supported. In the example represented the desk-board A is rigidly attached to the stem E, which is adjustable in the pillar or standard F.
Of course the desk might be made with a folding extensionflap and folding returnpiece at one side only, though it will generally be made with the said flap and returnpiece on each side, as in the example shown.
What I claim as my invention is 1. The combination with a desk-board and an extension-flap so hinged thereto as to be capable of being spread laterally therefrom or of folding over the front thereof, of a returnpiece for said flap so hinged to said board as to be capable of folding under the lower edge of said board when the flap is folded and of being extended under said flap when said flap is spread, substantially as herein described.
2. The combination with a desk-board and an extension-flap so hinged to either side thereof as to be capable of being folded thereon or of being spread laterally therefrom, of an extension retu rn-piece hinged to said board to be folded under the lower edge thereof or spread lengthwise therefrom, and a fastening for connecting said flap and return-piece together when both are spread, substantially as herein described.
3. The combination with a desk-board and of said board when the said flap and returnan extension -flap so hinged to either side piece are folded, substantially as herein de- IO thereof as to be capable of being folded therescribed. 011 or spread laterally therefrom, of an extenl 1 5 sion return-piece hinged to the said board to HE OD PALMER be folded under the lower edge thereof or \Yitnesses: spread lengthwise therefrom, and a fastening FREDK. HAYNES, forconnecting said return-piece with the back M. E. FLETCHER.
