SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,972, dated May 18, 1897. Application filed February 6, 1897. Serial No. 622,332. (No model.)

To all whom. t may concern.;

Be it known that I, SIDNEY FRANKLIN AUS- TIN, a citizen of the United States; residing at Brooklandville, in the countyof Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Measuring Attachments for Powder-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Myinvention has relation to improvements in bakingpowder box measuring attachments, and more particularly as an improvement on a device for the same purpose, for which Letters Patent No. 540,345 were issued to me on June 4, 1895.

The object of the improvement is to provide a simple, cheap, and portable measuring attachment of this class; and to this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings the same reference-characters indicate the same parts of the invention.

Figure 1 is aperspective'viewof a powderbox embodying my invention. Fig.` 2 is a vertical section through the box. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view ofthe registering rib and groove in the cover of the box. Fig. 4 is a top plan of the cover with the disk mounted a short distance between the limit-points.

It is a well-known fact that the usual ingredients which compose a baking-powderas, for example, cream of tartar and bicarbonate of soda-will keep indefinitely when separate, but when combined to form a baking-powder will rapidly deteriorate unless herm'etically sealed. My invention provides a box for keeping these ingredients separated and means for withdrawing the proper portion of each ingredient, as required, to form a baking-powder.

1 represents a suitable cylindrical box or case provided with a longitudinal central partition 2, which divides the box into two compartments 3 and 4.

5 represents a removable cover provided with a longitudinal V-shaped rib G, which engages a correspondingly-shaped groove 7 in the upper part of the box to insure the proper position of the cover of the box. This cover comprises a top or outside plate 8 and a diaphragm 9, arranged parallel with and a short distance below the top plate.

10 represents a rotating disk mounted on a stud 12 between the top plate and the diaphragm.

13 represents a pin fixed in the edge of the disk 10 and extending radially through a slot 14 in the rim of the cover, the length of the slot corresponding to about one-quarter of the circumference of the rim, and -it serves to limit the movement of the disk to that extent.

The disk is formed with two oppositely-arranged transverse pockets 15 and 16, and correspondingly-shaped openings 17 and 1S in the diaphragm 9 register with the pockets when the disk is at one end of its movement, and as these openings in the diaphragm are arranged one over each compartment it follows that if the box be inverted the powder in the compartments will fall by gravity through the openings in the diaphragm and fill the respective pockets in the disk. While the box is still in this position, if the'pin 13 be moved about one-half of the distance of the slot 14 the pockets in the disk are carried past the orifices in the diaphragm, and consequently the charge of powder in the pockets is separated from the bulk of the box.

19 and 2O represent oriiices in the top plate 8, which are arranged at a right angle to the corresponding orifices in the diaphragm, and are also in line with the pockets in the disk when the latter is at the opposite end of its stroke, so that the pockets havin g been filled, as above described, it is only necessary to move the disk to the end of its stroke to dis- Y charge the powder into the iiour.

In some instances I make the disk with but one pocket to hold a certain predetermined quantit-y, say a teaspoonful, and an undivided box. This construction will be found very convenient for the ordinary readymixed yeast-powder of commerce, as well as spices and other granular or powdered substances nsed in the culinary art.

Various other modifications of my inven- ICO tion will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in this art without departing from the spirit thereof.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
