' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST L. SIEGHORTNER, OF ASBURY PARK, NEWV JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO BERRANG & ZAOHARIAS, OF SAME PLACE.
FOUNTAIN-BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,405, dated September 21, 1897.
Application filed November 28, 1896. Serial No. 613,799. (No model.)
To ctZl whom it may concern.-
NER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Asbury Park, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Brushes and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Myinvention has relation to improvements in fountain-brushes and the object is to provide a simple, cheap, and effective device of this class; and to this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference-numerals indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figurel is a longitudinal section of a fountain-brush embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the cap on the line Ct at.
1 represents the upper end of a collapsible tube having an externally-threaded neck 2, provided with a diaphragm 3, having a central orifice 4E, and the annular edge of said collar surrounding said orifice is depressed to form a conical valve-seat 5, which receives a ball-valve 6. The tube 1 forms a reservoir for any suitable liquid, pasty, or semisolid material.
7 represents the internally-threaded screwcap, provided with a diaphragm 8, through which passes longitudinally a short nipple 9, which is oval in cross-section, as shown in Fig. 2. The lower ends of a series or mass of bristles 1O entirely fill the annular space between the outside of the nipple and the inner circumferential wall of the cap 7 being suitably fixed therein by cement or otherwise to retain them in place.
When the cap 7 is screwed down tight on the neck 2, the diaphragm 8 forces the valve 6 into its seat 5. This effectually prevents the egress of the contents of the tube. When it is necessary to use a portion of the contents, the cap is turned once or twice to the left to release said valve, and pressure being applied to the walls of the tube 1 the contents are forced out through the orifice 4, around the valve, and through the nipple 9 into the body of the brush formed by the bristles 10, Where it may be dispensed or applied, as desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as newand useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A fountain-brush comprising the reservoir 1, provided with the externally-threaded neck 2, the mouth of which is closed by an integral diaphragm 3, provided with a central countersunk orifice forming a conical valve-seat 5, a loose ball-valve adapted to engage said seat 5, in combination with the internallythreaded screw-cap 7, provided with an integral diaphragm 8, an oval nipple 9, centrally secured to said diaphragm 8, and a series of bristles 10, secured in said cap 7 and encompassing the nipple 9, the Whole constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described. v
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST L. SIEGIIORTNER.
