TALLY SHEET.

'No.'591,319. Patented Oct-5,1897.

PIECES woo @MFEET ENTO/i WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT O FFICE.

HERBERT L. BAKER, OF WHITEGASTLE, LOUISIANA.

TALLY-SHEET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591,319, dated October 5, 1897.

Application filed July 15, 1897 To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERBERT L. BAKER, of Whitecastle, in the parish of lberville and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Tally-Sheet, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. Y

The invention relates to books having tallysheets used'by lumbermen; and the object of the invention is to provide a new and improved tally-sheet arranged to permit of readily writing the tally-marks in; the proper spaces and to indicate at a glance the total number of feet in any number of pieces of lumber.

The invention consists principally of a tallysheet provided with a head-line of figures for showing the number of pieces tallied upon each line, a column of figures showing the amount of each piece tallied, and spaces for receiving the tally-marks,the said spaces being in alinement with the said head-line and the said figure-column, the spaces adjacent to the figure-column being blank and the remaining spaces having figures indicating the amount of lumber tallied, the figures being so arranged that the total amount of lumber as tallied in the preceding spaces is indicated by the figures in the next adjacent spaces.

The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will-be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure is a face view of the tallysheet. 7

The tally-sheet is provided principally with a head-line A, a column of figures B, and

spaces 0, arranged in columns adjacent to the column B, and each containing as a heading a numeral of the ones in the head-line A. The head-line A preferably contains heavy-faced figures, ranging from 5 up in the ratio of five, the figures indicating the number of pieces that have been tallied in each line when the column of spaces over which each successive figure stands has been reached, as indicated in the drawing.

The column B contains successive numerals indicating the number of ,feet in a piece of lumber, and the spaces 0' are adapted to receive the tally-marks. The first column 0 Serial No- 644,620. (No mode...

of the said spaces 0, adjacentto the column B, is left entirely blank, while the remaining spaces are filled with figures, preferably in pale ink,and so arranged tha't 'the total amount of lumber as tallied in the preceding spaces is indicated by the figures in the next adjacent space. Thus, for instance, as shown in the drawing, tally-marks have been made in the spaces adjacent to the numeral 7 of the column B up to the space-colu mu 0, headed by the numeral 20 in the head-line A.

Now it will be seen that the number of pieces counted was twenty, each containing seven feet of lumber, making a total of one hundred and forty feet, which is at once indicated in the space next adjacent to the space containing the last tally-marks, as will be readily understood by reference to the drawing. 7 The number ofrpieces (twenty) is indicated in a column E at the right of the columns O, and the total amount of feet (one hundred and forty) is indicated in a marginal column F next to the column E and near the right-hand end of the sheet. The head-line A is preceded by a heading D, bearing the legend Pieces, and the marginal column F is headed Feet, similar to the column B. The column E is headed Pieces, as indicated in the drawing. Now it will be seen that by the arrangement described a lumberman can conveniently keep tally on the sheet at the proper place, and at the same time can instantly read the total amount-say in feet of the lumber tallied.

To obtain the'grand total amount talliedon a single sheet, it is only necessary to add the numerals contained in the column F, and in order to obtain the number of pieces it is necessary to add the figures contained in the column E. Thus, as shown in the drawing, the sheet indicates a general total of sixty-two pieces and eight hundred and ten feet.

It is expressly understood that the first column O of the spaces 0 is left blank, as the first tally-marks will always commence in this space and the figure next to the said, space will plainly show the total number of feet tallied in all the spaces before it.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1 1. A tally-sheet, provided with a head-line of figures for showing the number of pieces tallied upon each line, a column of figures showing the amount of each piece tallied, and spaces for receiving the tally marks, the spaces being in alinement with the said headline and the said figure-column, the spaces adjacent to the figure-column being blank and the remaining ones having figures indicating the amount of lumber tallied, the figures being so arranged that the total amount of lumber as tallied in the preceding spaces is indicated by the figure in the next adjacent space, substantially as shown and described.

2. A tally-sheet, provided with a head-line of figures for showing the number of pieces tallied upon each line, a marginal blank column for receiving the numeral indicating the number of pieces tallied, a figure-column adjacent to the marginal blank column and showing the amount of each piece tallied, spaces in alinement with the said head-line and said figure-column,for receiving the tallymarks, the spaces adjacent to the figure-column being blank, and the remaining ones having figures indicating the amount of lumber tallied, the figures being so arranged that the total amount of lumber as tallied in the preceding spaces is indicated by the figures in the next adjacent space, and a marginal blank column adjacent to the last row of spaces, and adapted to receive the total amount of lumber tallied in a row of spaces, substantially as shown and described.
