A. A. LIND.
COUNTER STOOL.
(No Model.)
Patented Feb. 1, 1898.
WJNE SES.
\qo) S W PATENT tries.
AARON A. LIND, OF CANTON, OHIO.
COUNTER-STOOL.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 598,105, dated February 1, 1898.
Application filed ber 4,1895.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, AARON A. LIND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oanton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Counter-Stools; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the stool and its diilereni parts. Fig. 2 is a View showing the top or upper end of the seat-arm, showing the seat removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectionof the base, showing the location of the arm and spring. Fig. 4 is a detached view showing the bottom or lower end of the arm and its plate or spring. Fig. 5 is a ver tical section of the base, showing the arm elevated. Fig. 6 is a detached viewof the spring.
The present invention has relation to stools; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the base, which is substantially of the form shown in the drawings and is securely attached by means of suitable bolts or screws to the floor or other parts. To the base A is pivotally attached the bottom or lower end of the arm 13, which arm is formed of a length to bring the seat at the desired elevation. To the top or upper end of the arm B is attached the seat O, which seat is preferably journaled to the top or upper end of the arm B by means of the post CL and the socket b. For the purpose of preventing the seat from becoming accidentally detached the post a is provided with the groove 0 and the socket h is provided with the set-screw d, the inner end of which engages the groove 0.
For the purpose of closing the opening e in the base A the arm B is provided with the plate 1), which plate is located directly below the upper portion of the base, and for the purpose of causing the plate D to conform at all times with the bottom or under side of the upper portion of the base A said plate is preferably formed of thin steel or yielding material.
For the purpose of limiting the upward movement of the arm B and its seat 0 the setscrew f is provided, which set-screw is adj usted so as to limit or stop the upward movement of the arm B at the desired point.
For the purpose of automatically elevating the arm B and its seat C the spring E is provided, which spring is attached to the pin or bar 9 and is bent or curved, so that its free end will bear or press against the outer side or edge of the arm B. It will be understood that as the arm 13 is lowered the spring E will be compressed, thereby converting said spring into an acting one.
The base A is provided with the opening 7L, which opening is for the purpose of. receiving the extreme lower end of the arm B and preventing said arm from tilting backward in case the pin 71. should become broken. The form of the spring is the most desirable; but it will be understood that other forms may be used without departing from the nature of my invention.
For the purpose of providing a foot-rest the arms 7c are provided, which are securely attachedin any convenient and well-known manner to the arm 13, to which arms are attached the foot-rest is, said parts being so adjusted as to size and elevation that they will not interfere with the movements of the arm B.
For the purpose of preventing the pin h from becoming displaced it is provided with screw-threads upon one end, which screwthreads fit into a screw-threaded aperture 71?, formed in the base A. It will be understood that by providing the plate I) the opening 6 will be closed at all times, thereby preventing any dirt or dust from coming in contact with the spring E.
For the purpose of preventing the spring E from interfering with the movements of the plate 1) the groove k is provided and is 10- cated in the base A.
It will be understood that by providing the opening 72 and locating the same directly 0pposite the extreme lower end of the arm B in case the cross-pin h should become broken the arm B will rest upon the lower wall of the slot or opening e, thereby forming a fulcrum for the arm and stopping the 1; ackvvar fl movement of said arm by reason of its extreme lower end engaging with the opening h.
Having fully described my invention, what 5 I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the base A, provided with the pivoted arm B the yielding plate D, connected to, and moving with the arm B,
10 the seat 0, attached to the arm B, and a spring located Within the base A, and the setscrew f, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence I of two witnesses.
AARON A. LIND.
