SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601,982, dated April 5, 1898. Application filed April 13, 1897. Renewed March 4,1898. Serial No. 672,604. (No model.)
To lLZZ whom it may concern,.- Be it known that LMARTIN PEIRSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bristol, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful- Improvements in W'atchcases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for holding watches; and it consists, essentially, in providing a part of the watchcase at the back with a screw-threaded opening to removably lit a screw shank or stud carried by a plate supported within a pocket held on the 4body of the wearer.
The invention further consists of the details of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a watch-holding device, carried exteriorly of the clothing, to enable the ascertai'nment of the hour without requiring the removal from a pocket or other concealed place and wherein the watch will be securely held against movement and accidental disengagement.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a device for holding watches shown'applied and embodying the invention. -Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the Watchcase and the'plate held wit-hin the pocket, lto which the same is attached. Fig. 3 is a section on the line ma, Fig. l, showing a part of the holding device with a portion of the watchcase therein.
Referring to the drawings, wherein similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views, the numeral 1 designates a strap or band of leather or other suitable material having an enlarged or widened portion 2, which iits over the palm 0f the hand, and a reduced extending projection from one side thereof, as at 3, which is supplied with a'securing device or devices 4C. VOnA the other side of the widened portion the strap or band is reduced in width b y an inward curved depression 5 to fit around and under the thumb of the wearer, and from this. point the said strap or band gradually widens for the formation of a pocket 6,-which rests on the back ofthe hand of the wearer and has at its opposite side securing-straps 7 to engage the fastening device or devices heretofore setforth. An opening 8 is formed in the outer side ofthe pocket 6, and to one side the said pocket has a lateral projection, as at 9, and thereto is attached a wrist-strap 10, 'having a suitable fasteningdevice in connection therewith and adapted to surround the wrist to hold the device securely in position on the hand. Within the pocketa plate 1l is primarily positioned and constructed of aluminium, and projecting from the center of this plate is a screw stud or post 1l', adapted to removably engage a screw-opening l2 in the `back of the watch. By this means the watch is held inseparable in the supporting device on the hand of the wearer when it is desired to carry the watchin this manner. The said watch can also be disconnected from the holding device when desired and attached toa chain or guard and carried in a pocket.
The device as set forth is especially useful and convenient for motormen, drivers, bicycle-riders, and trainers of horses or other timekeepers, and the entire watchcase is preferably made of aluminium.
In arranging the band or strap 1 upon the hand the widened portion 2 protects the palm of the hand, and said strap or band otherwise oonformsto the shape thereof. The material of which the strap or band is constructed may be varied at will, and the device as a whole provides a safe support for a watch, which is always held in convenient position for ascertaining the hour.
It is obviously apparent that many minor changes in the details of construction might be made and substituted for those shown and described without in the least departing from loo back of the hand having a pocket therein, a metallic plate in the said pocket provided with n screw stud or shank, and a Watehease having a screw-opening therein to removably engage the screw stud o1l shank, and securing devices, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
ln testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
MARTIN PEIRSON. l/Vitnesses:
ARTHUR G. MUZZY, OSCAR ANDERSON.
