Description

@uitrit faire atwt @frn SENECA M. RICHARDSON, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS. Letters Patent No. 60,787, dated January 1, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLANING-MAGHINES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, SENECA RICHARDSON,'0` the city and county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Planing, Tonguing. and Growing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and enact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents-,so much of a tonguing and grooving machine as is necessary to illustrate my invention.
Figure 2 represents a top or plan view of the parts shownin fig. 1; and
Figure 3 represents a plan view of a detached part. p
Thenature of my invention consists of a peculiarly operating mouth-piece or pressure-surface 4to be used in connection with the cutting cylinders of either a planing or tonguing and growing-machine.
In the drawings, A is the tonguing and grooving-head to which the cutters B are fastened. HeadA is fastened to the topof the' shaft, C, which is supported and turns in boxes or bearings, D, the lower one only being shown in the drawings. Shaft C and head A, with its cutters, are driven by a belt running upon pulley, E, from any convenient driving-shaft, drum, or pulley. F is the bed-piece,cver which the ,boards or pranks are fed tp the cutters in the ordinary manner by feed-rolls. G is a self-adjusting mouth-piece or presser, which is so connected or attached to the bed-piece, as to always retain the same relative position to the cutters and cutter-head, that is, it always remains or works the same distance from the centre of the shaft upon which the cutter-head works. The face I of the mouth-piece is attached `to a circular part, J, which has twocircular grooves 1 and 2 cutin it, as shown at fig. 3, in which the mouth-piece is shown with the cap K removed. In each of these. groovesis placed 'a friction-roll, 3. A curved groove is cut in the top of the bed-piece F to receive a spiral spring, 4, one end of which rests against a stop or lug fast to the curved part J, andthe otherend against the bed-piece at the end ofthe groove. The parts are put together as follows: Spring 4 is placedl in the groove or recess cut in the bed-piece, after which 'the mouth-piece is placed so that the rear end of the circular part J will be over the spiral spring as shown in the drawings. -The friction-rolls 3 are now inserted in the grooves 1 and 2, as shown, and then cap K placed in position andthe screws or bolts-5 passed down through theV cap and friction-rolls 3, into the bed-piece F. It will be seen that `the mouth-piece thus attached is free to-spring' back when suiiicient force is applied to its face or presser part I, to overcome the force of spring 4, and that as soon as the pressure is removed spring 4 will cause it to return or spring back to its original position, as shown in ig. 3. L is an adjustable guide, attached Ato the top of the b'ed F, against which one edge of the plank or board slides and` by the latter iskept in proper position while passing through the machine. The principal object of my invention isto prevent the fibres of the Wood being split or torn up bythe action of the cutters and which is apt to be the case where no'pressure-bars are used. My pressure-bar or mouth-piece is so constructed that it always retains the same relative position to the cutters, and'hence there is a uniformity and accuracy in the work not accomplished by those machines which have pressure-bars or mouth-pieces', but which move away from the cutters o r cutter-head when forced back by the uneven surface of the 'board or plank. I have shown my invention applied to a ton'guing and growing-machine, but it is alike applicable'to a planing-machine.
i Having described one good way in' which my invention may be applied to practical use, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a tonguing and grooving or other like machine, I claim the combination with the cutter-head of an .adjustable-mouth-piece or presser-bar attached to the bed-piece of the machine, so that while separate and distinct from the cutter-head, it may be capable of moving concentrically therewith, the whole being constructed .and arranged for operation, substantially as shown and described.
SENECA M. RICHARDSON.
