SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 612,296, dated October 11, 1898.

Be it known that I, GEORGE H.WOODWARD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Belmont, inthe county of Belknap and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bot-.
tle Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bottle attachments; and the object in view is to provide a simple and eifective attachment which may be applied to any ordinary bottle and which is designed to measure off the dose of medicine to be taken and also to indicate the time at which the last dose of medicine was taken or the time at which the next dose of medicine should be taken.
The detailed objects and advantages of the invention will be clearly pointed out in the course of the subjoined description.
The invention consists in an improved bottle attachment embodying certain novel features and details of construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and incorporated in the claims hereto appended.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a sufficient portion of a bottle to show the improved attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the attachment with the measure removed, and Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof with the measuring-cup detached.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts inall the views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a bottle, and 2 the neck thereof. The bottle, as well as the neck, may be of any usual or preferred construction.
In carrying out the present invention I employ a band 3, preferably of metal, although any desired material may be used in its manufacture. This band or collar is intended to pass around the neck of the bottle, as shown in Fig. 1, and the ends of the band are extended in substantially parallel relation, as indicated at 4, and provided with one or more openings through which are inserted one or more bolts or screws 5, by the tightening of which the band or collar may be clasped tightly around the neck of the bottle.
At one side a bail-shaped support or yoke 6 is attached rigidly to the band or collar 3, and the extremities of said support are bent inward to form journals 7, which enter bearing-openings 8 in an annular collar orring 9, constituting a holder for the measure, the said openings being located at diametrically opposite points, as shown. Removably fitted in the collar or ring 9 is a conical cylindrical measure 10, composed, preferably, of glass and provided with suitable graduations, as indicated at 11, to denote the amount of liquid contained therein. This measure is provided with a pitcher-shaped mouth 12, so that timely spilling of the contents thereof.
Secured to the band 3'uponone side of the neck of the bottle is a dial 13, similar to that of a clock or watch and of suitable size, the said dial being provided with numerals designating the hours of the day and being provided also with a hand 14 for the purpose of indicating the particular hour at which the last dose was taken or at which the next dose should be taken.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a simple, convenient, and efiective attachment in which the measure is swiveled upon the support proper and adapted to maintain at all times an upright position. Thus as the bottle is tilted for emptying a portion of the contents thereof into the measure the mouth of the measure will always be located just beneath the end of the bottle-neck, so as to conveniently receive the liquid poured therein. Upon restoring the bottle to its upright or normal position the cork may be inserted in the neck thereof, and at the same time the measure partially revolves upon its point of suspension and maintains its vertical position.
The dial, with its indicating-hand, is a convenient and important adjunct to the measuring device and its support above described.
It will of course be understood that the device hereinabove described is susceptible of various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction, which may accordingly be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new, and desired to to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. A bottle attachment, embodying a band for engaging the neck of a bottle, a ring havin g a free pivotal and self-ad j ustin g connec tion with said band, and a measure removably fitted in said ring and designed to sustain itself always in position to receive the contents poured from the bottle, substantially as described.
2. An attachment for bottles, comprising a band adapted to fit around the neck of a botthereto, a ring having a free pivotal connection with said support on a diametrical axis, and a measure removably fitted in said ring, so that the major portion of its weight is be low the ring whereby the measure is made self-righting, substantially as. described.
3. An attachment for bottles, consisting of a band to embrace the neck of the bottle, a bail-shaped supporting-yoke connected thereto at an intermediate point, and a measureholder in the form'of a ring connected pivototally to the ends of the yoke at points diametrically opposite, substantially as and for the-purpose described.
