INVENTOR WITNESSES: clZfl/Zamk ATTORNEYS.
lhvrrnn TATES ALBERT D. MARSH, OF OVID, NEW YORK.
TONGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 621,356, dated March 21, 1899.
Application filed June 20, 1898. Serial No- 683,955. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT D. MARSH, of Ovid, in the county of Seneca, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tongs, of which the following,
taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to tongs of the form usually known as ice-tongs.
My object is to produce a tongs having two movable jaws and provided with means whereby the distance to which said jaws can be opened can be adjusted and said jaws set to open only a fixed distance and their closing also regulated. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a tongs provided with two independent'regulators. Fig. 2 is a like View of a tongs in which the pivoted toggles or links are slotted. Fig. 3 is a like View of one in which the jaw-bars are slotted and the links fixed. Fig. 4 is a crosssection of Fig. l on the dotted line y Fig. 5 isa like view of the same on the dotted line 0000. Fig. 6 is a plan perspective of an adjustingslide detached.
These tongs are of the type having a body and a single handle thereon.
A is the body, having, a suitable handle 2, a slot 3, and in Fig. 1 a secondary slot 4, it being optional whether to have more than one slot. In the slot 3 an adjusting-block 5 is placed, a washer 6 or other suitable device guiding and retaining it therein, or by one or both of the jaw-bars 7, which are pivoted on said block, as by a bolt 8. Links or toggles 9 are in Figs. 1 and 2 pivoted upon said body, as at 10. In Fig. 1 they are connected to said jaw-bars by pivot-joints, in Fig. 2 by means of a slot 11 in each link and a bolt through it, and in Fig. 3 the links are secured to the body and connected to slots 12 in the jaw-bars.
In Figs. 1, 2, and 3 the traverse of the block 5 regulates the distance of the opening or closing of the jaws, adjustable for either purpose by shifting the bolt 8.
In Fig. 1 an additional means is shown for regulating the operation of the jaws, consisting of a loop 13, secured in any desired position by a bolt through it and the slot 4, and when it is secured the links will engage with it and stop the opening of the jaws, and'when it is loose it will rise and fall with the links and perform no function. It will be seen that it can be dispensed with in some cases.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, 1s
1. In tongs, the combination with a body and handle in one piece provided with a slot, of a block adapted to he slid in said slot, j awbars pivoted and adjustable upon said block to regulate the opening of the inwardly-projecting jaws upon the free ends of said jawbars, and links pivotally connected to said jaw-bars beyond their pivot, and connected to said handle, whereby the single movement of said handle and body in a direct line will open or close said jaws.
2. In tongs, the combination with a body and handle in one piece provided with a slot, a block adapted to be slid in said slot, jawbars pivoted and adjustable upon said block to give a sliding support for said pivot in opening or closing the jaws upon said jaw-bars, links connected to body and flexibly connecting said jaw-bars to it, of a loop around said body and links and adjustably secured to said body whereby, when rigid thereon, the opening of the jaws is regulated, their opening and closing being effected by the lengthwise movement of said body and handle.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of June, 1898.
ALBERT D. MARSH.
In presence of- J. D. THOMAS, J. B. THOMAS.
