No. 624,853. Patented May 9, I899.

G. OBERBECK.

PENHOLDER.

' n filed Mar. 8, 1899.)

Nrrn STATES PATENT OFFICE.

GEORGE OB'ERBEOK, OF JERSEY CITY, NEWJJER SEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE EAGLE PENCIL COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.

PENHOLDER.

SPEOIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,853, dated May 9, 1899.

' Application filed March 3,1899. Serial No. 707,654. (No model.)

, holders in which the tubular grip portion is longitudinally slitted in order to impart a certain elasticity to the same.

The invention will first be described with reference to the accompanying drawings and will then be more particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a penholder embodying the invention.

the pen can be inserted and held. 7 there is nothing in the device.

The grip portion of the barrel A is longitudinally slitted or slotted, as seen at b, leaving a series of longitudinal ribs a, which are struck up or otherwiseforined, as shown, so as to have a concavo-convex form in crosssection, with the concave faces outermost, as

indicated in Fig. 2. These ribs possess a certain elasticity, which is desirable for the grip and the handle are made in one.

portion of a penholder. Their form also is such as to impart to them sufficient strength to prevent them from being deflected or bent, thus assuring the proper retention of the general contour of the grip portion under all conditions of ordinary usage. The ribs are slightly raised above the level of the plain cylindrical unslitted part of the barrel, but expose no sharp edges to the fingers, and the holder is one in which there is a certain provision for ventilation, allowing the passage of air around and between the ribs.

The device is simple, efiicient, desirable, and can be made cheaply and expeditiously.

The invention is of course equally applicable to penholders in which the holder proper of concavo-convexity imparted to the ribs can be varied without departure from the invention. j I

What I claim, and desire tosecure by Let ters Patent, is'

As a new manufacture, a penholder the tu bular grip portion of which consists of a series of longitudinal ribs concavo-convex in cross-section formed in one with the body of the holder and separated lengthwise from each-other by intervening slots, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of February, 1899.
