UNITED STATES A PATENT OFFI E.

JOHN JACOB COOPER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO ANDREW J. DITMAN, OF ENGLEWOOD, NEW JERSEY.

SUS'PENSORY BANDAGE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,392, dated July 4, 1899.

' Application filed October 19, 1898.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OHN JACOB COOPER, of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combined Jock-Strap and suspensory, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved combined jock-strap and suspensory arranged for convenient attachment to the body and allowing of a ready opening and closing of the suspensory without disturbing the position of the waistband on the body.

The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improvement with the waistband in an open position, and Fig. 2 is a perspective side View of the improvement with the suspensory partly opened.

The improved device is provided with a waistband A, the rear portion A of-which is formed of an elastic fabric, the ends being secured to the non-elastic flexible front portion, made of canvas or like material and formed in two sections A A and having reinforced ends A A respectively, of leather or like material. The ends A A are provided with fastening devices,-such as a button B and a receiving-socket B, for securely fastening the overlapping ends A A together to close the waistband, as shown in Fig. 2. The length of the waistband is somewhat less than the size of the wearers waist, so that when the device is applied the elastic rear portion A stretches sufficiently to securely hold the waistband and parts carried thereby in position on the body. At the rear ends of the front waistband-sections A A are permanently secured the rear ends of the thigh-bands O C, respectively, made of an elastic material, preferably such as that usedfor the waistband portion A, and these bands cross each other Serial No. 693,992. (Specimens) intermediate of their length and are secured together at the crossing, continuing approximately parallel with each other to form the pocket portions O C A filling-piece O of elastic material is sewed at its edges to the inner edges of the said pocket portions, the lower end of the filling-piece being reduced to fit the angle between the pocket portions C O and to form with the latter a forwardlyprojecting pocket or sack, thus afiording a suspensory.

The upper ends of the forward portions C O of the bands 0 O and the filling-piece O are secured to a band D, preferably of leather, and provided on its inside with sockets E for engaging buttons E on reinforcing-strips F, attached to the front sections A A of the waistband A at the outside thereof. L- shaped reinforcing-strips G are used on the Waistband at the junction of the rear portion A, the front sections A A and the bands O O to render the device very strong and durable. The bands 0 O by extending in a diagonal direction form thigh-circlets.

By the construction described the waistband need not be opened when it is desired to open the suspensory, and the latter cannot become detached from the waistband, as the bands 0 C are permanently secured to said bands.

By attaching the elastic bands 0 O and the elastic portion A to the non-elastic sections A A of the waistband the elasticity of the latter is not impaired by said bands and the latter are free to yield on the thighs without interference by the waistband.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A combined jock-strap and suspensory, comprising a waistband arranged to be opened and closed at the front, two elastic thighbands attached to the waistband at the sides thereof and crossed intermediately of their length, a filling-piece secured at its edges to the inner edges of the free front ends of said thigh-bands the said filling-piece being reduced at its lower end to fit the angle between -the thigh-bands, and to form with the latter a pocket or sack, and means for detachably connecting the pocket at its upper end with the front ofthe Waistband, substan-,

tially as shown and described.

2. A combined jock-strap and suspensory, comprising a waistband having an elastic rear portion and a non-elastic front, and adapted to be opened and closed at the front, two elastic thigh-bands attached to the Waistband at the rear ends of the non-elastic front, said said non-elastic band to the non-elastic front of the Waistband, substantially as shown and described.

A combined jock-strap and snspensory,

comprising a Waistband having an elastic rear portion and adapted tobe opened and closed at the non-elastic front, two elastic thighbands attached to the Waistband at the rear ends of the non-elastic front, said thigh-bands crossing'each other intermediately of their length, an elastic filling portion secured at its edges to the inner edges-of the front free ends of said thigh-bands, a non-elastic band attached to the extreme ends of said thighbands and filling-piece, means for fastening said non-elastic band to the non-elastic front of the Waistband, and reinforcing-strips at thejunction of the elastic rear portion of the Waistband, with the Waistband-front and the thigh-bands, substantially as shown and described.

JOHN JACOB COOPER.
