SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters :Patent No. 632,696, dated September 12, 1899. Application filed November '7, 1898. Serial No. 695,647. (No model.)
To all 'wh/ont it may concern.-
Be it lrnown that I, KARL BUXBAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bicycle-Pumps, which improvement is fully set forth in the following speciiication and accompanying' drawings.
My invention consists in providing a bicycle with a pump for iniiating the tires thereof, a portion of the frame thereof constituting the barrel, which also guides the handle of the piston-rod, the novel feature being pointed out in the claims that follow the speciiication.
It also consists of a novel construction of said handle whereby it may be readily applied and removed, as desired.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the frame of a bicycle, which, excepting the feature of my invention applied thereto, is of usual construction. The member B of said frame is adapted to constitute the barrel of a pump, for which purpose it is provided with the piston C, (shown in dotted lines,) the piston-rod D, the handle E, and the nipple F, the latter being adapted to have attached to it a tube, which maybe connected with the valves of the tires for inating the latter. In opposite sides of the member B are vertical slots G, in which the handle E has its play, it being seen that by raising and lowering or operating said handle as usual in pumps the piston will receive its motions, andthe handle is guided by the walls of said slots. The handle is adapted lto be removed from the pistonrod when service of the same is not required and may be carried elsewhere, as desired. For this purpose I provide the stock of said handle, at or about the center thereof, with the jaws II and J, the jaw II being preferably stationary, but the jaw J is mov ble, it being` retained and guided in an opening in said stock and adapted to advance toward and rel cede from the jaw II. The member K of the handle is fitted to said stock and held thereon by suitable screw-threads, it being adapted to contact with the jaw J at the back thereof and press the same toward the jaw II, it bein g seen that when the handle is passed through the slots of the frame thefaces of the jaws, which are recessed, are placed over the end of the piston-rod, which end is shaped to cause said faces to take iirm hold thereof. Then the member K of the handle is screwed or pushed in,whereby it presses the jaw J against the rod and, with the jaw II, causes the handie to be tightly connected with said rod, when, as is evident, the pump may be operated. By unscrewing or withdrawing the member K the jaw J will be relieved of pressure, and the handle is then free to be removed from the piston-rod and withdrawn through the slots of the frame. In order to facilitate the outward motion of the jaw J and fully set it back from the jaw II, it is provided with the pin L, which is passed through slots M in the stock of the handle, serving also to guide said jaw J and prevent turning of the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a bicycle-pump, a handle for the piston-rod, provided with jaws, one of which is movable, a member of said handle bein g adapt ed to operate the movable jaw and hold it engaged with said rod, and a pin on said jaw, the stock of the handle having a slot in which said pin is received and guided.
2. A bicycle-pump having its barrel constitute a member of the frame of a bicycle, a piston in said barrel, a rod connected with said piston, a handle for said rod having a removable member, and jaws on said handle, one of which is movable, said jaws being adapted to engage with said rod, said member having a slot for said handle in its motions and said handle having its movable jaw adapted to be controlled by said handle member.
