BARREL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 635,212, dated October 17, 1899.
Application filed May 27, 1899. Serial No. 718,559. (No model.)
tion involves a certain peculiar construction by which the barrel is provided with a double sheathing or wall, thus providing a space surrounding the inner sheathing or wall, in which space non-conducting material may be packed, thus effectually to protect the con tents of the barrel. I
This specification is the disclosure of one defines the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a vertical section taken through the barrel; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the barrel, the top or cover of the barrel being removed.
The barrel has an outer wall 3, constructed of staves in the usual manner and sustained by head-hoops4 and bilge-hoops 5. The bottom of the outer wall 3 is provided with a cover 6, the edges of which are beveled, so as to fit against the bevel or chamfer of the staves, as indicated in Fig. 1, and the top of the outer wall 3 is provided with a similar cover 7 Sustained within the outer wall 3 is the inner wall 8 of the barrel, which is also constructed of staves and strengthened by the head-hoops 9 and bilge-hoops 1-0. The ends of the staves forming the wall 8 bear respectively against the covers 6 and 7, and the inner wall is spaced from the outer wall by means of rings or annuli 11, which are engaged in crozes formed in the inner faces of the staves of theouter Wall 3 after the manner of the usual crozes of barrel-staves. Heads 12 are fitted in the inner wall 8 in the usual manner. By means of this construction the inner wall or package 8 may be made to contain the goods to be shipped or stored, and the space between the two walls, as well as between the two heads or covers 6 and '7,
may or may not be filled with the non-conducting material, as desired.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A barrel, comprising an inner wall, heads .fitted within the inner wall respectively at the ends thereof and closing the inner wall, annuli encircling the inner wall and respectively at the ends thereof, an outer wall having crozes formed in its inner face, the crozes receiving the outer edges of the annuli and the outer Wall encircling the inner ,wall, and heads or covers fitted in the respective extremities of the outer wall to cover the heads of the inner wall.
