- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOHN L. BOONE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
FLY-TRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,438, dated December 5, 1899.
Application filed October 11, 1898. Serial No. 693,233. (No model.)
To otZZ whont it neay concern:
' Be it known that I, JOHN L. BOONE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fly-Traps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it most nearly appertains to make, use, and
practice the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a holder and shield for fly-paper when it is in use which will not only protect its sticky surface from coming in contact with objects, but will not interfere with its utility as a flycatcher.
Fly-sticking paper is one of the most effective fly-traps known; but its use is limited because of its disagreeable capacity of sticking to anything that touches it and because of its quality of smearing and contaminating clothing and other objects that come in contact with it.
My invention consists of a base on which the fiy-sticking paper is placed with its sticky side up, and an open-mesh Wire cover or shield which is adapted to fit over it and be fastened to the base, all as hereinafter described.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the fly-sticking paper on a suitable base and covered with a shield. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same.
A represents a thin board or other base which is somewhat larger than the sheet of fly-sticking paper to be used.
13 is a wirework screen or shield which is made crowning, so as to fit down upon the base A like a cover.
The fly-sticking sheet C is placed upon the base A with its sticky side uppermost, and the screen B is placed over it and secured upon the base A by suitable means.
I prefer to make the screen of the same .size as the sheet of fly-paper, so that its rim will fit down upon the edge or margin of the sheet, which is usually free of sticky mate-' rial, and thus clamp the sheet in place.
I prefer to hinge the screen at one end to the baseand to provide a snap-latch to fasten its opposite or free end down. The hinges and snaps can be formed of wire in the usual way, so that the screen can be unlatched at its free end and turned back on its hinges to permit the removal of a sheet of fly-paper or the placing of a fresh one; but the screen might be secured by snap-catches without the hinges, so that it can be detached andlifted bodily from the base. As thus protected the sticky sheet will not be objectionable on the grounds stated.
The fly-trap can be laid down on a chair or an eye can be secured to thebase, so that it can be hung on anail 011 the wall without fear of anything coming in contact with the sticky surface, except the flies that pass through the meshes of the wire screen or cover. In this latter case a wide concave lower edge can be provided for the shield to catch the sticky material should it be soft enough to run.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- I 1. A fiy-trap composed of a base; a fly sticking paper placed on said base; a removable frame adapted to fit down upon the outer rim or edges of the fly-sticking paper and an open-mesh screen covering said frame, substantially as described.
2. In a fly-trap consisting of a sticky surface supported on a .base; an independent removable frame adapted to fit down and be secured upon the base around the sticky surface, said removable frame having wires permanently attached to its upper edges and extending across the frame, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of October, 1898.
JOHN L. BOONE. Witnesses:
WM. H. THOMPSON,
OHAs. J. ARMBRUSTER.
