No. 645,465. Patented Mar. l3, I900.

I N. nu BRUL.

CIGAR BRANDING MACHINE (Application filed. June 24, 1899.)

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 645,465, dated March 13, 1900.

Application filed June 24, 1899. Serial No. 721,758. (No model.)

T0 at whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, NAPOLEON DU BRUL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Branding Machines, of which the following is'a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in machines which will receive cigars and pass them to a branding or equivalent marking device, from which they will successively receive an imprint and then deliver the cigars from the machine. Machines of this character generally comprise a feeding device having pockets in which the cigars are delivered and which feeding device carries the cigars successively past a reciprocating branding or marking device, the branding form of which is brought into contact with each cigar. Branding devices of this character have been found to work unsatisfactorily with some forms or shapes of cigars by reason of the fact that the surface to be branded is not parallel to the branding form which is brought into-contact therewith. Moreover, by reason of the great variety of cigar shapes it has heretofore been impracticable to give to the branding device the proper set to adapt it to widely-differing shapes of cigars.

My invention also relates to improvements in cigar-branding machines forming the subject-matter of Letters Patent No. 596,860, dated January 4, 1898, and particularly to the construction of the plunger,which carries the branding device, as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a fragmentary view of a branding-machine, showing the means for carrying the cigars and a branding device which reciprocates relatively thereto. Figs. 2, 8, and 4 represent, respectively, an outer side view, an edge view, and an inner side view of the plunger embodying my invention. Fig. 5 is a section through the joint of the plunger.

1 represents a portion of a table upon which the cigars are delivered and from which they are taken by a rotating drum 2, having pockets 3. 4 represents the adjustable branding device, which may be of any suitable construction, being here shown as a holder for removable type 5, which are heated by a gasburner 6. The branding device is mounted upon a plunger 7 which in turn is mounted to slide vertically in a bearing 8 and receives reciprocating movement through a pitman 9, which is connected to some moving part of the machine, such as 10. As the specific construction and arrangement of the machine thus far described is not material to my pres ent invention and such parts are fully described in my previous Letters Patent referr'ed to, they need not be more specifically defined here.

As heretofore constructed it has been customary to have the branding device project substantially at right angles to the plunger and in a horizontal direction; but unless the upper surface of the cigar at the point of impress was approximately straight an even impress could not be made and some parts of the brand would be illegible. In order to adapt the branding device to conform to any shape of cigar, I have provided the vertical plunger 7 with a joint 11, which may be of any suitable construction, so that the upper section 7 which carries the branding device 4, and consequently the branding device itself, may be set at any desired angle.

In making the joint 11 the bolt 12 is pref erably provided with a pin 13 to prevent its turning in the lower member of the plunger and is provided with a clamping-nut 14 and washer 15, by which the parts may be rigidly held in any position to which they are adjusted.

With a branding device constructed as above described the brand may be applied to a cigar with any taper, and the machine may be adjusted readily and as often as necessary.

Having thus described my invention, the

following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A branding-machine comprising a table, a vertical plunger slidable on the table, a hinged upper section having a joint connecting it with the upper end of the plunger, and a branding device secured to the upper section; substantially as described.

2. A branding-machine comprising a table, a vertical plunger slidable on the table, a hinged upper section having a joint connecting it with the upper end of the plunger, and a branding device adj ustably secured to the upper section; substantially as described. NAPOLEON DU BRUL. Witnesses:
