WILLIAM H. HAYDEN, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
'PHOTGGRAPHEC' DARK ROOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 654,568, dated July 24, 1900. Application filed December 8, 1899. Serial No. 739,589. (No model.)
To aZl whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM H. HAYDEN, a citizen of. the United States, residing at lVorcester, in the county of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Dark Rooms for Photographers, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings forming a part of the same, in which v Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box or case forming a photographers portable dark room and represented in its closed form. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the same in its extended form. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4 i, Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal central sectional view showing the top and bottom. of the box or case with the body portion folded between them, these parts of the structure being slightly separated, but represented in their relative positions when the device is to be folded in compact form for transportation.
Similar reference-letters refer to similar parts in the 'diiferent views.
My invention has for its object to provide a device for the use of photographers by which exposed plates or films may be developed and protected from light and which is capable of being collapsed and reduced. to smaller dimensions, which may be readily carried by hand, and I accomplish these results by means of the construction and arran gement of parts, as hereinafter described, and set forth in the annexed claims The portable dark room forming the subject of my invention consists of a rectangular box or case formed in three separate parts--viz., a cover A, a bottom B, and body portion 0, consisting of sides 6 C and ends consisting of twoleaves D D and E E, said leaves being hinged together at their inner edges at D E and hinged at their outer edges at D D and E E to the ends of the sides 0 0 making the body portion of the case in bellows form, which may be collapsed when the top and bottom have been removed by bringing the sides 0 0 together, as represented in Fig. 5. The bottom 13 is provided with a flange B, forming a shallow rectangular tray which is slightly smaller than the body portion 0, so it may be slipped within it, as shown in Figs. 3 and i, and hold the body portion in its extended form. The sides 0 G are provided on the inside with metal angle-pieces F F, which are attached to the sides 0 C and are adapted slip over the flange B of the bottom B in order to hold the sides and flange in contact. The cover A is provided with a flange A, slightly larger than the body portion 0 and adapted to slip over it, as
shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and the inside of the cover isp'rovided with a projecting rib A parallel with the flange A, with a space between the flange and rib to receive the upper edge 0 of the body portion when the cover is applied thereto. The side 0 of the body portion is provided with an opening closed by red or orange-colored glass G for the admission of non-actinic light, and the cover A is provided with an opening similarly closed by red or orange-colored glass H, and hinged to the top of the cover A is a lid 1, having triangular flaps J J hinged thereto and adapted to hold the lid in an elevated position to shield the eyes of the operator. By folding the flaps J J inwardly the lid I is allowed to fall over and cover the glass H. The side 0 is provided with two openings, which are inclosed by flexible sleeves K K, to receive the hands of the operator.
When the apparatus is not in use, the body portion is folded and laid upon the edge of the flange 13, which is inclosed within the cover A, forming a compact package, as represented in Fig. 1, which is secured by a strap L. When the folded body portion G rests upon the flange B of the bottom B, a space is left within the flange for the storage of photographic supplies such as developers, trays, drc.and the sleeves K K are folded flat between the body portion 0 and the cover A.
I am aware that photographers portable dark rooms having peek holes or openings for the operator and flexible sleeves by which the arms are admitted to the box and light is excluded therefrom are not new, and I do not claim such broadly. I believe, however, that the apparatus forming the subject of my present invention embodies novel features of construction by which it is rendered extremely rigid in its extended form and capa- :2 states ble of being folded in a very compact form, With space for the storage of such articles as are indispensable to the use of the apparatus.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A portable dark room consisting of a collapsible bodyportion, a removable cover and a removable bottom provided with a flange adapted to enter said body portion and hold it extended, substantially as described.
2. A portable dark room consisting of a collapsible body, a removable bottom having a flange adapted to enter said body portion and hold it extended, angle-irons attached to said body portion and arranged to overlap the flange on the bottom, substantially as described.
8. A portable darkroom consisting of a bottom portion provided with a flange adapted to enter the body portion, a collapsible body portion slightly longer when folded than the flanged bottom and adapted to rest thereon, With a storage-space in the bottom portion, and a cover having a flange adapted to inelose the folded bodyportion and the flange of the bottom portion, substantially as described.
1-. A portable darkroom consisting of a collapsible body portion, a bottom having a flange adapted to enter the body portion and hold it extended,a cover havinga flange adapted to inclose the end of the body portion and a rib parallel with said flange adapted to bear against the inside of the body portion, substantially as described.
5. A portable dark room consisting of a body portion, comprising the sides and ends formed of leaves hinged together and to the ends of said sides, a bottom portion provided With a flange adapted to enter the body portion and hold it extended, a flanged cover adapted to inclose the end of the body portion, means for holding the body portion in contact With the flange of the bottom, said body portion and top having openings for the admission of non-actinic light, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in presence of two subscribing witnesses, this the 2d day of December, 1890.
