` SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 679,131, dated July 23, 1901.

Beit known that I, LESLIE H. THOMPSON, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Crowley, in the parish of Acadia and State of Lou isiana, have invented certain new and useful ImprovementsinStrainers orFilters forPump Tubes or Barrels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to strainers or filters for pump tubes or barrels; and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efficiency in use.

The invention consists, essentially, in a pump tube or barrel having formed near its lower end a number of holes or openings, a wire wound spirally around said tube or barrel, a cylindrical strainer or filter ot' wiregauze fitting over said wire, and a protectingcover of wire-netting fitting on said strainer, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the said drawings the reference-n u meral l designates a pump tube or barrel formed near the lower end with a number of holes or openings 2 for the admission of water thereinto. Spirally wound around said tube and secured thereto is a wire 3, and fitting over said wire is a wire-gauze cylinder La space being left between said cylinder and the pumptube, so as to allow full admission of the water to said holes or openings. The numeral 5 designates a wire-netting cylinder fitting over the wire-gauze cylinder for protecting the latter from injury.

In practice as the pump is operated the water will pass through the wire-gauze cylinder into the space formed between the same and the pump-tube and from thence through the openings 2 into said tube. By reason of the water-space formed,as aforesaid, between the strainer and the pump-tube there is no obstruction to the free passage of the water into the tube.

The wire-netting cover serves as a protec- Ition to the wire-gauze strainer and prevents the same from being injured or broken from any cause.

I have shownin Figs. l and 2 the preferred form of construction; but the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4 may be employed, if desired.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim isl. The combination with a plain cylindrical pump-tube provided at its lower `end with holes or openings, of a wire spirally wound around the tube and secured thereto; and a strainer secured upon the wire-coil.

2. The combination witha pump-tube provided at its lower end with openings, of a Wire spirally wound about said tube, a wiregauze cylinder fitted over said wire with a space between the same and the tube, and a reticulated protecting-covering of larger mesh over the said cylinder' and terminating at the lower end of the saidv tube, substantially as shown and described.
