MILK-'PAIL HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 686,422, dated November 12, 1901.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. SHERD, a

' citizen of the United States, residing at Belview, in the county of Redwood and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Milk-Pail Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

-My present invention has for its especial object to provide improved devices for holding milk-pails between the knees while milking; and to this end it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.

Figure 1 is a plan view showing the milkpail having my improved devices applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 00 m of Fig. 1, some parts being broken away; and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 053 a of Fig. 2, some parts being broken away.

The numeral 1 indicates an ordinary tin or metal milk-pail which is provided at its upper edge with a beaded rim 2.

To hold the pail, I employ a pair of clamps, each of which, as preferably constructed, comprises as follows: 7

The character a indicates a'knee-piece atforded by a bar provided at its inner end with a depending jaw a, which is adapted to engage the inner upper surface of the pail.

The character 1) indicates a sliding jaw which is provided with a vertical screw-threaded stem 19, that works adj ustably upward through the slot on in the bar a and is provided above the said bar with a clamping-nut 19 The said adjustable jaw b is further pro vided with a notch 19 which is adapted to receive the beaded rim 2 of the pail and permit the depending portions of the jaw 17 to cooperate with the jaw a. of the bar a to tightly clamp the body of the pail, as shown in Fig. 2.

The character f indicates a plunger-like stem which is attached at its inner end to the jaw 19 and at its outer end works loosely through a guide-lug a on the bar a. A coiled spring g, which surrounds the plunger f, is secured at its inner end to the said plunger and at its outer end reacts againstthe lug a This spring g serves to yieldingly force the jaw 19 toward the jaw a and is of itself sufficient in some cases to hold the jaws b and a clamped on the pail. However, when the jaws are applied to the pail, as indicated, they may be securely locked or held simply by tightening the nut 17 The nut 6 also serves to hold the jaws separated against the action of the spring g, when desired, as is often the case when the device is removed from the pail or when it is to be applied to the pail.

The character It indicates a thin metal shield, shown as applied to the bar a and serving as a housing for the spring g.

The devices above described are very efficient for the purposes had in view. They may be very quickly applied to or removed from the pail, and when applied and the nuts 5 tightened they very firmly hold the pail.

The two devices are preferably applied about as shown in Fig. 1, as in these positions they are properly projected for engagement with the knees of a person seated for milking. As is evident, these devices make it very easy to firmly hold the pail between the knees and without requiring the pail to bertightly pressed by the knees.

The devices above described are of course capable of modification as to detail within the scope of my invention.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent of the United States, is as follows:

1. Apail-holdercomprisingapairof clamping-jaws movable one with respect to the other and one thereof having a projecting knee-piece and a spring under continuous strain and, when released, throwing said jaws together, substantially as described.

2. In a pail-holder, the combination witha pair of clamping-jaws sliding one upon the other and one thereof having a projecting knee-piece, of a spring under continuous strain for yieldingly throwing said jaws together, when released, and a clamp or look for securing the one jaw with respect to the other either in a clamping position or in a releasing position against the tension of said spring, substantially as described.
