plates certain improvements in telescopic 1o cases or bags, having primarily for their purpose to provide a telescope of the ordinary type with a covered opening whereby ready access may be had to the interior of the case or bag Without separating or lifting apart the I two members.
Myinvention comprehends generally a telescopic traveling-case having its outer or closure member provided with au opening in the top and a supplemental cover for said 2o opening held to be engaged with and made fast by the fastening-straps usually employed with cases or bags of the character noted. In its more complete make-up it comprises a telescope case or bag having an opening in the top extending longitudinally thereof, a cover-piece to iit thereover hinged to the top, and having its ends bent to overlap the ends of the case and form reinforce portions.
In its more subordinate features my inven- 3o tion consists in certain novel features of construction and peculiar combinations of parts, all of which will hereinafter be fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a perspective View of a telescopic case constructed in accordance with my invention, the parts being closed for traveling. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the supple- 4o mental cover being swung back. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. et is a similar view of the same on the line 4.4. of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an inverted plan view of the upper telescopic section.
Fig. 6 illustrates my invention as applied to an endwise-adjustable telescope.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings, A B designate, respectively, the inner and the outer members of the telescopic case,
5o which may be of the conventional type, with the two parts arranged to separate in a vertical direction, as shown in Figs. l to 4, or endwise, as shown in Fig. o', as my improvements are all confined to the top part of the outer member. 55
In my construction the outer member B has an opening Z) in the top, which, as shown in the drawings, extends the full length of the top of the member B and centrally thereof, such arrangement of the opening being pre- 6o Vferred to provide for easy access to the contents of the bag or case its entire length; but
I desire it understood that the said opening may be of less length and disposed at an angle, or even transversely, Without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
The members A and B have the usual leather reinforce-pieces C at the ends and edges, which for the edges of the top or outer member B extend only to the opening b, as 7o shown.
D designates what I term a supplemental cover, which is made of stout canvas board and has a width to fully cover the opening I) and such length as to provide for downturned angle-pieces d d, which overlap the ends b of the member B and serve as reinforce portions for that part of the upper edges a. of the member A not having leather reinforce portions, said pieces CZ d also serving to hold 8o the member D from loose lateral motion and as a bearing-surface against which to tighten the ends e e of the fastening-straps E, Which are made fast to the top of the cover D, which cover, to increase the stability of the top, has a longitudinal reinforce-piece D', to which the said straps E are riveted.
The straps E have loop ends e' e for bail ends f of the strap-handle F, as shown.
The cover D may be a detachable part of 9o the telescope; but to prevent its being separated and lostfrom the telescope-bodyI hinge the said cover to the top of member B, preferably by riveting the transverse bindingstraps G to the said cover D, as atg, and also to the top of member B, as at g', such arrangement providing a simple Way of retaining the straps G in place and hinging the cover D to member B.
From the foregoing, taken in connection Ioo with the accompanying draWings,it is thought' the advantages of my invention and the man'- ner of its use will be readily apparent. It will be noticed that the end straps E will serve to keep the member B tightly down and locked to member A after the cross-straps Gr are loosened to permit of the cover D being throw'n back, as shown in Fig. 2, to gain access to the interior of the case, thus providing a mostconvenient means for placing within and removing from the case or bag such small toilet and, other articles much used in traveling without disturbing the larger articles.
While I have particularly described my improvement as applied to a vertically-separable telescope, the same may be readily applied to an endWise-slidable telescope, as shown in Fig. 6.
Having thus described lnyinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,l is- 1. In a telescopic bag or case, the combination with the outer section, said section having a longitudinally-extending opening and having the usual end reinforce-pieces @,and a closure member, adapted to iit over said opening, and having turned-down ends to project over the ends of the outer section, between the corner-pieces C, Whereby said closure member is held from lateral movement when fitted to its'closure position, and means connected with the closure member for strapping the two sections, and the closure member together, substantially as shown and de; scribed.
2. The hereinbefore described travelingtelescope, consisting of an inner section, an outer section adapted to telescopically engage the inner section, said outer section having a longitudinally-extending opening on its top part, a closure member consisting of a at body adapted to t over the said opening, and having its ends bent at right angles to extend over the ends of the top, a handle-strap connected to the closure member extended lengthwise thereof, and a fastening-strap extended transversely of the telescope ixedly connected to the top of the outer section adjacent one side of the closure member, fixedlyrconnected to the said closure member at a point Vadjacent its fixture with the top, passed over the closure member under the handle-strap, and havinga buckle connection at the other side of its fixed connection, all being arranged substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
