SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 700,956, dated May 277, 1.9.02. Application led September 11, 1901. Serial No. 75,009. (No model.)

Be it known that I, ANTON LORENZ, a citizen of the Empire of Austria-Hungary, residing in West New York, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windows, of which the followingis aspecification.
This invention relates to a combinedwindow-casing and window-frame in which the frame is adapted to open and close with the sashes, so as to facilitate the cleaning of the latter; and it relates, further, to means for facilitating the raising and lowering of the' sashes in the frame.
The objects of the invention are to provide a window-casing with a window-frame which is hinged to the casing at one side in ordery dow-frame, sliding sashes in said frame, and
means for suspending each sash, consisting of a single cord, a counterbalancing-weight having a pulley, and a plurality of pulleys suitably arranged on the window-frame andin the stile of the casing, so as to balance the sashes whether the window-frame is in open or closed position.
The several novel features of construction and combination of parts will be fully described hereinafter and set forth in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drrawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of the invention, showing the upper sash partly lowered and the sash-suspending mechanism in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is avertical transverse section of the same on line 2 2, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section view on line 3 3, Fig. l. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of the top of the window-frame with the casing in section in order to show the pulleys and the sash-cords; and Fig. 5 is a'perspective View of the upper corner of the window casing and frame, drawn on an enlarged scale, showing the windowframe in open position.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the window-casing, which is set in the wall of the building in the usual course of construction andhas hinged thereto at one side'the window-frame B, adaptedto swing open. The frame is approximately the same thickness as the casing and adapted to iit' with sufficient tightness into the rabbeted casing in a manner best adapted to insure a comparatively air-tight contact. The usual ways V are provided in the sidesof the frame B for the sliding of the sashes C, each sash being suspended by a novel arrangement of guide-pulleys, sash-cord, and weight.
The suspension device consists of a counterbalancing-weight D, adapted to move in the recessed exterior side of the casing A', upon which the frame B is'hinged, a sashcord c, attached at each end to the opposite sides of the sash, and passes over a plurality of pulleys mentioned and located as follows: the pulley d in the counterbalance-weight D, twin pulley E in the side A' of the casing, the pulleys Z9, provided in the hinged side of the frame opposite the twin pulleys and the pulleys arranged on the top ofthe frame B adjacent the sides,the pulley'b', and the guidepulley b2. The guide-pulley Wis mounted vertically on the frame top adjacent the hinged side thereof. The twin pulley consists of two pulley-wheels which are mounted one above the other in the oscillating pulley-box E', that is provided at the top and bottom near corresponding edges with pivots e, which are received in a housing F, secured stationary into a recess of the side A' of the casing. In order to provide for the oscillating movement of the pulley-box E, the housing `F has one of its sides diverging, as shownat F in'Figs. 4 and 5. The lower pulley-wheel of the twin pulley is arranged on the same level with the pulley I) in the side of the frame and the upper pulley on the same level with the pulley b in the top of the window-frame. The sash- IOO the cord passing from the upper pulley-Wheel of the twin pulley around the horizontal guide- `pulley h2, along the top of the frame, over the pulley b', to the opposite side of the sash. The hinged window-frame is provided at its opposite side with a'suitable knob,by which the same can be readily opened or closed, it being fitted with sufficient tightness into the rabbeted casing and window-sill.
When the window-frame is placed in open position at right angles to the casing, which is the most convenient position for cleaning both sashesfon opposite sides, it is necessary that the sash cords and weight respond to the movement of the frame into its inward or open position and again when the same is moved into its normal or closed position. The twin pulleys, with their oscillating boxes and housings, are preferably arranged in the left-hand stile of the window-casing and serve for the purpose of permitting free movement of the window-frame into open or closed position. The suspension device referred to .facilitates also the raising and lowering of the sashes when cleaning them without the necessity of sash pulleys and weights at the opposite side of the casing, which could not be arranged conveniently in connection with a hinged and movable window-frame. The sash-weights are preferably of flat shape and of double the weight of the usual sash-weights, and in the present case one weight has to counterbalance the entire weight of the sash, which heretofore was accomplished by two weights. In the same manner one single sash-cord is sufficient for raising or lowering each sash, said sash-cord being arranged as described in connection with the twin pulley in the casing and the guide-pulleys on the windowframe. The improved construction facilitates, therefore, not only the raising orlowering of the sashes in the usual manner when thewindow-frame is in its normal position in the casing, but it'also permits the raising and lowering of the sashes when the window is in inward or open position ready for cleaning the sashes. Without the oscillating pulley-boxes the cords would be strained and subjected to frictional wear, which would be objectionable for various reasons. By the play of the boxes, however, the twin pulleys readily adjust themselves in proper position for facilitating the easy motion of the sash cord and weight whatever be the position of the window-frame relatively to the casing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a` Window, the combination, with a Window-casing, a Window-frame fitting into said casing and hinged at one side thereto, Sldable sashes arranged in said frame, and means for suspending each sash, consisting of guide-pulleys located respectively in the window-casing and on the window-frame, sash-weights and single sash-cords attached at their ends to opposite sides of the sashes and guided over the pulleys of the casing and frame, substantially as set forth.
2. In a window, the combination, with a window-casing, of a window-frame hinged at one side to said casing, slidable sashesin said frame, and means for suspending said sashes, consisting of pulleys suitably arranged on said frame, cooperating twin pulleys arranged in said Window-casing, sash-cords passing over said pulleys, and counter-balancingweights for suspending-said sashes, substan= tially as set forth.
3. In a window, the combination, with a window-casing, a window-frame hinged at one side to said casing, slidable sashes in said window-frame, pulleys arranged on the top of said frame adjacent each side, pulleys arranged in the hinged side of the frame adjacent the top thereof, cooperating twin pulleys'provided in the window-casing opposite the last-mentioned pulleys in the frame, counterbalancing-Weights provided with guidepulleys and sash-cords passing over the pulleys of the weight, casing and frame, and being attached to the opposite sides of the sashes, substantially as set forth.
4E. In a window, the combination, with a lWindow-casing, of a window-frame hinged at one side to said casing, slidable sashes in said frame, suitable pulleys arranged in the top and side of said frame, twin pulleys arranged in said window-casing, a box for housing said pulleys and journaled one above the other thereinpa stationary housing in said casing, one side of said housing diverging from the pivotal center of the pulley-box, counterbalancing-Weights, one for each sash, and a sin-` gle sash-cord guided over pulleys and adapted to suspend each weight and sash, substantially as set forth.
