ADAM BERNINGER, OF PITTSBURG,PENNSYLVANIA.
SPECIFICATION forming vpart of Letters Patent N o. 731,744, datedJ' une 23, 1'903. Application filed September 4, 1902. Serial No. 122,065. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADAM BuRNINcnR,a citi zen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Embossed Pictures, of which the following isa specification, reference being had therein to the ac- A companying drawings. f
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in embossed pictures,
and has for its object the provision of novel means whereby life-like figures areproduced upon a suitable background, the figures being composed of single pieces of plastic material provided with coverings" molded into the same.
The further object of the invention is to produce a picture embodying figures whichv construction, combination, and arrangement,
as will be hereinafter more specifically described, and then particularly set forth in the claims, and in describing the invention in det tail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein'like numerals of reference will indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a frontl view of a picture constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a like View of a modified form of construction.
To put my4 invention intor practice, I provide a suitable background l, preferably made of a fabric and ordinarily of a fabric having a deep black color-such, for instance,- as black velvet. This background is suitably secured upon the back 2 of the frame 8, the latter being preferably provided with a glass or other transparent front 4. Suitably mounted upon the front face of the fabric background are one or more figures 5, which are pressed over a stamp into the outlines of the imitate. VThese figures may be secured to the background by stitching or any other suit able Ways, but they are preferably composed of celluloid which is subjected to the action of stamp-press in order to impart the desired configuration thereto. In practice Isometimes form the raised figures of different colored celluloid in order to have portions thereof represent the garments and thexlike. In someY instances I also form a portion of the background of celluloid or secure embossed celluloidA to the background around the figures.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a celluloid modified form of construction in which I employ, in addition to the raised figures composed of celluloid or light material which is pliable when heated, a covering 6, preferably com-4 posed of a nue-silk fabric. This covering is placed directly over the figureand is subjected to the action Vof the press, together with the figure, so that the fabric ismodeledinto the configuration of the raised figure and practically forms a part thereof.
This application should he considered in connection with an application' made by me 4June 27, 1902, Serial No. 113,516, in which I employ draperies in frontof the embossed or raised pictures, said application resulting in the granting of a patent to me bearing date `October 7, 1902, No. 710,741.
While I have found celluloid by far the most desirable and preferable material to employ in this connection, yet other light material which could be readily molded to desired shape may be employed, and I therefore do not wish to limit myself to the specific material described.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As a new article of manufact-ure, a picture embodying a fabric background mounted in a suitable frame, embossed figures secured thereon composed of single pieces of plastic material, and a covering over said figures molded into the configuration of said plastic material, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a picroo ture embodying a background mounted in a In testimony whereof I afx my signature suitable frame, said background having an in the presence of two Witnesses. embossed figure made integral therewith, said figure formed of a single piece of plastic material, and having@ covering molded therewith upon the outer face of said gure, substantially as described.
ADAM BERNINGER.
