Description

No. 735,312. 'PATENTBD AUG. 4, 1903. J. N. STOKES.
ADJUSTABLE DESK.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 2a. 1903 H0 MODEL.
MM f I f2 z W UNITED STATES Patented August 4, 190a. I PATENT FFICE.
JOHN N. STOKES, OF BENTONVILLE, ARKANSAS.
ADJUSTABLE DESK.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Paterit lll'o. 735,312, dated August 4:, 1903.
Application filed April 28 1903. Serial No. 154,654. (No model.)
Be it known that I,'JoHN N. Sro Es,a citizen of the United States, residing at Bentonville, inthe county of Benton and State of- Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Desks,
' and I do declare the following to be a full,
-or large books than they could without such an attachment. The attachment consists of a section of the top of a desk adapted to be raised by an adjustable spring toa level with the book of record at the page being used and to be secured in that position by springs and notches.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a desk with my attachment raised in position, part of the front of the table being cut away to show the mech anism of the invention. Fig 2 is an end view of the desk with the attachment raised.
My invention is described as follows:
The top of the desk may be horizontal, or it may incline, and when it does incline the top of the attachment will incline on the same line with the top of the desk. A recess is made in the top and front side of the desk to accommodate the attachment3. cess is indicated by the-dotted lines 3'.
1 represents the desk.
2 represents the top of the desk, a section of the desk being cut away to show the mechanism by which the attachment is operated.
3 represents the attachment,-which is in the shape of an inverted box; 4, the top of the attachment, 5, the front railing of the attachment. This front railing has a section in its center also cut away in order to show the bearing and the upper end of the spring secured therein.
This re- The railing 6 of the desk also has a section cut away to show the mechanism of the attachment.
' Extending from the top of thedesk and parallel with the en of the attachment 3 are two notched bars 7. The upper ends of these notched bars are secured to the top 2 and their lower ends to a cross-bar 8, secured to the lower edge of the front rail 6 of the desk.
Secured to and extending a little below the lower edge of the rail 5 of the attachment 3 are lugs 9, and to these lugs are secured the upper ends of springs 10. Each one of these springs lOis provided with a tooth 11, adapted to fit into the notches of the notched bars 7, their lower ends passing down below the crossbar 8, so that the two may be caught at the same time between the thumb and finger and pressed together, and thus the teeth 11 are withdrawn from the notches and the attachment may be elevated or lowered.
Secured to the lower face of the mp4 of the attachment 3 is a socket 12, in the lower end of which fits a rod 13, the lower end of said rod being secured to the cross-bar 8 by a bolt and nut 14:. Encircling this rod 13 is a cone-shaped spiralspring 15, its lower end .being secured to the cross-rod 8 and its upper end in the lower end of the socket 12. purpose of this spring is manifest.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a desk, provided with a recess in its top and front side; an inverted-box shaped attachment, adapted to fit in said recess; notched bars extending from the top of the desk down to the lower edge of the front rail of the same, and on lines parallel with the ends of the attachment; springs secured to said attachment, each provided with a tooth, adapted to enter the notches of the notched bars, "and with handles extending below the table, and adapted to be grasped between the thumb and finger, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
2. Thecombination of a desk, provided with a recess in its top and front side; an inverted-box shaped attachment, adapted to fit in said recess; notched bars extending The from the top of the desk down to the lower edge of the front rail of the same, and on lines parallel with the ends of the attachment; springs secured to said attachment, each provided with a tooth, adaptedto enter the notches of the notched bars, and with handles extendingbelow the table, and adapt ed to be grasped between the thumb and finger; a cross-rod secured to the lower edge of the front rail of the desk; a socket secured to the lower face of the top of the attachment; a rod, having its upper end secured in said socket, and its lower end in said crossrod and a cone-shaped spiral spring surrounding said rod, and having its lower end se- In testimony whereof I affix my signature 2o in presenceof two witnesses.
