Be it known that I, WILLIAM THOMAS Mc- NARY, a citizen oftheUnited States, residing at San Jose, in the countyof Santa Clara and State of California, have invented a new and useful Bicycle-Lock, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to bicycle-locks, and has for its object to produce a device of this character of comparatively simple construction which will be carried permanently by the bicycle and may be readily manipulated for locking the latter or moved to its normal inactive and unobstructing position.

To these ends the invention comprises the novel details of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a side elevation of a portion of the bicycleframe having my invention applied thereto and illustrating the parts in normal position. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the bicycle locked. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional elevation. Fig. 4 shows the device applied for looking a chainless Wheel.

Referring to the drawings, lindicat-es the center post or bar of a bicycle-frame 2, which carries a sprocket-Wheel. 3 for operating the drive-chain 4. These parts are of the usual or any preferred construction, inasmuch as they constitute no part of my invention.

In accordance with my invention I apply to the frame-bar 1, adjacent to the sprocket- Wheel, a clip 5, preferably consisting of a pair of semicircular plates or sections hiugedly connected bya pint-1e 6, extended through 00- incident hinge-knuckles 7, formed upon the respective clip-sections, which are maintained in clamping position by a screw 8.

with which one of the chain-links ispermanently engaged.

14 designates a clip which is engaged with the frame-bar 1 at a point above and suitably remote from the clip 5 and comprises a pair of semicircular plates or sections hingedly or pivotally connected, preferably by a tubular pintle or member 15, extended through 00- acting hinge-knuckles 16, formed upon the clip sections, which latter are secured in clamping position by means of a screw or the like 17.

18 indicates a longitudinally-movable rod or plunger extended centrally and loosely through the tubular member 15 and provided at its normally upper end with a thumb-piece or head 19 and at its lower end with a hook or its equivalent 20. This plunger is provided between its ends with a fixed bearing disk or member 21, which engages the upper end of a normally-expanded spring 22, disposed within the tubular member 15 and bearing at its lower end upon the .bottom wall 23 of the member.

In practice the lock 12 is normallysustained in an unobstructing position by engaging its shackle 24 with hook 20 of the plunger, which latter is acted upon by the spring for exerting an upward pull upon the lock of sufficient strength to prevent accidental escape of the latter from the hook and rattling of the parts. When in this position, if it is desired to lock the bicycle the plunger is pressed downward "against the action of the spring to permit disengagement of the shackle from the hook, when the shackle 24 may be passed through the sprocket-wheel 3 and around the sprocketchain 4, as is usual. When, however, the device is employed upon a chainless wheel, as in Fig. 4, the lock-shackle is engaged with one of the pedals.

From the foregoing it will be seen that I produce a device of simple construction which will be eflicient inoperation, and one which is admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in View; but it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise details herein set forth, inasmuch as minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with a velocipede frame-bar, of a flexible connection attached thereto, a lock carried by said connection, a longitudinallymovable plunger connected with the frame and operable for engagement with the lock, and means for maintaining said plunger yieldably under tension.

2. .The combination with a velocipede frame-bar, of a clip embracing the same and comprising a pair of sections, a pintle pivotally connecting said sections and provided with an eye, a flexible member engaging the eye, a lock carried by said member, and a longitudinally movable plunger connected 4. The combination with a velocipede frame-bar, of a flexible member associated therewith, a lock carried by said member, a clip embracing the bar and comprising a pair of sections, a tubular member pivotally connecting the sections of the clip, a longitudinally-movable plunger extended through the member and operable for engagement with the lock, and a spring disposed within the tubular member and acting upon the plunger to maintain the same yieldably under tension.
