-To ALL 'WHoM-Ir MAY ooNcEEN:
Be it known that we, CHARLES S. HALE and OLIVER G. HUBBELL, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahogas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new' and useful Improvements in Spring-Bottoms for Boots and Shoes and we do hereby declare that the following is a full'and complete'descrption of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a. part of this specification, in whieh i Figure 1 is a side View of the spring-bottom attached to a boot or shoe.
v Figure 2 is' a. view of the under side. i
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the views. Y
In the drawing, A represents a. thin metallic plate, which is to be secured to the sole of the boot, and. is provided with an elastic heel,B. To the under side of this plate is secured, at a, the spring C, the other end of said spring being secured to the lower plate D. VThis spring may be of any elastic material, or coiled spring, if
` desired, can be used, or the springv C secured near the toes and the other end reston the plate D, as indicated by the dotted lines a', or in any other desirable manner, the under or lower plate D supporting the saine. The purpose of this spring is to ease the jar when walking, as, when walking on hard pavements, it is very tiresome, but with this spring-bottom attached to the boot or shoe, the person can walk with ease, and the jar of walking is avoided. y f
What we claim as our improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is' 1. In combination with a spring, the plates A D, and boot or shoe, .substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. We claim,`in combination with the above, the elastic heel B, as and for the purpose set forth.

OLIVER c. HUBBELL.
