UNITED STATES Patented June 28, 1904.
CHARLOTTE UEBEL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CHEST-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. '7 63,815, dated June 28, 1904.
Application filed October 8,1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLOTTE UEBEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chest Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel construction in a chest-protector, the object being to provide a device of this character which will closely fit the wearer, is easily put on and adjusted, is neat in appearance, can be washed, and which is porous and sanitary; and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a representation of a person wearing achest-protector constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of my chest-protector.
My device consists, essentially, of two members or flaps A and B, adapted to cover the chest and abdomen and the back of the person, respectively, said members or flaps being secured together by a shoulder-seam C at one side of the neck portion 1). On the other side of the neck portion D the shoulder portion of the member or flap B is provided with a series of male members of button-fasteners E, the female members of which are secured along the edge of the shoulder portion of the flap A.
To secure the proper fit of my garment around the neck of the wearer, I provide on the inner end of the shoulder portion of the flap B a curved strap F, carrying the male member of a button-fastener G at its free end, which is adapted to enter the female member thereof, secured to the'inner face of the member of flap A at the middle of the neck portion of the latter.
' As the sides of the body are sufficiently protected by the arms and to avoid too great warmth, my device is so designed as to leave this portion of the body uncovered as far as possible, and to thisend the flap or member Serial No. 176,206. (No model.)
A is cut away or tapered from the shoulder portion to the waist, the extreme lower end being slightly flared or enlarged to provide two small extensions H, carrying fasteners I on their inner faces at their free ends to engage with similar fasteners on the belt-straps J and J at the lower end of the flap or member B, said straps J and J being provided with a series of fasteners on their outer faces to interlock with said fasteners I consecutively to draw the lower end of said garment closely around the waist portion of the body. On the inner face of the free end of said straps J, I provide a fastener K, adapted to interlock with the fasteners K on the outer face of the free end of the strap J to join said straps when drawn to fit the waist-line and adjust same thereto, while the outer face of said free end of said strap J is further provided with fasteners L, adapted to interlock with a fastener M on the inner face of the flap A at the lower end of same and atits middle portion. The number and exact arrangement of said fasteners may be varied somewhat to suit the wearer without departing from my invention. It is essential that said members or flaps should be held to fit the body closely, so that they cannot bulge between their ends, and thus admit cold air to the parts mainly to be protected, and to this end I provide on said mem ber or flap B two straps N on its side edge above the waist portion, said straps N being provided on the outer faces of their free ends with a series of fasteners 0, adapted to consecutively interlock with fasteners P on the inner face of the member or flap A adjacent its side edges, the said straps being adapted to pass below the armpits to join said flaps A and B and adjust same to cling to the body.
I claim as my invention.
In a chest-protector, the combination with a member adapted to cover the chest and abdomen and cut away at its upper end to receive the neck, of a member adapted to cover the back similarly cut away to receive the neck and secured to said first-named member at one side of said neck portion along the shoulder, fasteners at the upper end of both members at the other side of said neck portion, a curved strap on said rear member at its free upper end adjacent its neck portion adapted to pass under and follow the neck portion of said front flap and be fastened at its rear end to the mid-t dle of said neck portion of said front flap, belt-straps at the lower end of said rear flap adapted to extend around each side of the body at the waist-line and underneath the lower end of said front flap, fasteners at the free ends of said straps for connecting same together, fasteners at the side edges and middle portion of the lower end of said front flap adapted to interlock with fasteners on said belt-straps to secure said front flap thereto, straps on the side edges of said rear flap between the ends thereof adapted to pass below the arms and provided at their free edges with a series of fasteners, and fasteners on the inner face at the side edges of said front flap adapted to interlock with said fasteners on said straps to secure said front and rear flaps together between their ends, substantially as described.
In testimony whereofI afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLOTTE UEBEL.
