INSTRUMENT-HOLDER FOR DENTISTS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 774,879, dated November 15, 1904.

To all whom it may concern: 7

Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. HULLHORST, a citizen of the United States, residing at T0- ledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Instrument-Holders for Dentists; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

In the practice of their profession dentists have difficulty in arranging and disposing of their instruments in such a manner that they are easy of access, readily found, and when not in use secured against dust and handling.

My invention rel-ates to means for overcoming these difliculties; and it is designed to furnish an instrument-holder in which all of the instruments may be brought within convenient reach of the operator and exposed to plain view, so that the proper instruments may be selected without delay. I attain these objects by means of devices and arrangement of parts hereinafter described,'and shown and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective, view of my device in position to be returned to its cabinet, and in which Fig. 2 is a like view of my device ready for use. 7

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in both views.

In the drawings, 1 is a cabinet having a drawer-compartment 2 in which slides in and out a drawer 3. The sides of the drawer have forward extensions 4, which at front and top are chamfered downwardly, as at 5. Between the two side extensions 4 fits loosely a block 6, which is pivoted, as at 7, between the two side extensions. The front 8 of the swinging block corresponds in height and width with the opening of the compartment 2 and is finished to correspond with the finish of the cabinet. On its upper face the block 6 is provided with a number of holes bored into the block a sufficient depth to receive the shank of the instrument, of which one is shown in place, as at 9. The front part of the block, which is thicker vertically than the remainder of the block, is stepped downwardly, as shown, and these steps are provided with holes to receive the shorter instruments. From the inner side of one of the side extensions projects a pin 10, which forms a stop to limit the upward movement of the back part of the block on its pivot. The downward movement of the block is limited by its contact with the front piece 11 of the drawer.

The operation of my device'is as follows: The front of the block 6 is pulled out toward the operator the required distance by means of a knob or suitable handle and is tilted downwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the rear of the block comes in contact with the stop'lO. The block is now in such position that the operator can look directly down upon the exposed ends of all of the instruments, each one of which is in its proper place. The angle of the block to the horizontal will now correspond with the bevel of the front ends of the side extensions, sothat the sides do not cast any shadows upon the block or interfere with the quick selection and removal of the proper instruments. When not in use,

the front end of the block is swung upwardly upon its pivot into the same horizontalplane with the drawer, and the drawer and block are pushed horizontally back into the drawercompartment and-there properly secured.
