SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 775,897, dated November 22, 1904. Application filed July 25, 190i. Serial No. 218,149. (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OSEF DEGEN, doctor of philosophy, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at Di'iren, and whose post-ofiice address is No. 26 Hohenzollernstrasse, Diiren, Prussia, German Empire, have invented a new and useful Gorn-Protector,of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to rings used for the protection of corns and the like; and its object is to remedy the drawbacks attendant upon the use of the well-known description of corn-rings composed of a ring of felt and a layer of plaster. Those corn-rings frequently cause inflammation of the skin, this drawback being chiefly due to the want of elasticity of the felt employed. It has been found that a sufiicient degree of elasticity can be given to the ring by making it of the well-known absorbent cotton-wool used for surgical dressing purposes if care be taken that the fibers of the cottonwool, which, as is well known, hang together very loosely, do not altogether lose their connection or cohesion. It has been found that this can be effected in a satisfactory manner by slightly coating both faces of the absorbent-cotton-wool ring with a solution of gelatin, glue, or some well-known substitutes for these binding agents. This solution penetrates a short depth into the absorbent cotton- WOOl and binds the fibers, so that in this way a strengthening layer is produced on both faces of the ring, which insures the cohesion of the ring without afl'ecting its elasticity.

The essence of the invention thus consists in making the corn-ring out of surgical dressing-cotton or absorbent cotton-wool and inclosing it between binding layers by coating it on both faces with a solution of gelatin,

glue, or the like binding matter. Experiments carried out on a large scale with rings formed according to this invention have given very satisfactory results.

A ring according to this invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a vertical section, and Fig. 2 a plan.

The ring a, made of surgical dressing-cotton or cotton-Wool, is provided with upper and lower stiffening layers 6 Z), produced by a coating with a solution of gelatin or the like. 0 is a layer of plaster arranged as usual, and (l the strap for securing the layer of plaster to the ring and fastening the ring to the foot.

What I claim is-- V 1. ,As an improved article of manufacture a corn-protector comprising, in combination with the usual plaster and securing-strap, a ring made of surgical dressing-cotton and having both faces impregnated with an elastic binder, substantially as and for the purpose stated.
