BROOM-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 778,865, dated January 3, 1905.

Application filed April 11, 1904:. Serial No. 202,699.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARTIN W. HYENGA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bangor, in the county of Van Buren and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention provides a simple and inexpensive supporting device for household use preferably, and is designed particularly as a means for holding a broom or the like.

Specifically speaking, the invention involves a peculiar form of clamp means adapted to be secured to a wall or any suitable support, which clamp means is adapted to engage the broom-handle by a clamping action to hold same in an ascertained position and place when not in use.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.

While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the invention secured to a wall or like support. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the relative arrangement of the parts of the clamp member upon the supporting member. Fig. 3 is a side elevation.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

My invention comprises, essentially, two members-a supporting member 1, which is designed to be secured to a wall or any sup port conveniently located, and a clamp member 2, pivotally mounted upon the supporting member and adapted to positively engage the broom which is to be supported by the device. The supporting member is curved at its outer portion, as shown at 3, so as to receive the broom, and this member is provided with spaced arms 4, extending rearwardly from the curved portion 3 thereof, and projected downwardly from the spaced arms 4 extend the supporting-standards 5. The standards 5 are provided with openings at their upper and lower ends, through which fastenings 6 may be passed to secure the supporting member to the wall. The lower ends of the standards 5 are secured by means of a single fastening, which passes through the openings therethrough. It is preferred that the supporting member comprising the parts just above described be of integral formation, though this is not essential so far as concerns the operative parts of the device.

The clamp member 2, which is carried by the supporting member 1, is of a form somewhat similar to the member 1, being provided with spaced arms 7 which latter are provided with journals 8, extending laterally therefrom and received in bearings 9, provided upon the spaced arms 4 of the supporting member 1. A stop member 10 forms a rearward extension of one of the journals 8 of the clamp member 2, and this member is transversely disposed, being adapted to cooperate with one of the spaced arms of the supporting member to limit the movement of the clamp member in the operation of the broom-holder. From the other journal 8 of the clamp member is extended a lever 11, which projects downwardly from the said journal and which is adapted to be grasped and operated to disengage the broom from the holder. The lever 11 may be of any suitable length found best for the purpose of the invention, and a spring 12 connects the lever with one of the standards 5 of the supporting member 1 and normally tends to hold the clamp member down upon the said supporting member and in engagement with any object disposed upon the holder. The outer end portions of the arms 7 of the clamp member are connected by an integral bar 13, which latter is deflected or curved between its ends, as shown at 14, to form a seat which receives the handle of the broom when the latter is in supported position upon the holder. The deflected or curved portionof the bar 18 constitutes the engaging portion of the clamping member 2 and conforms in its shape to the round form of handle, so as to prevent all likelihood of dis' placement of the broom after the same has once been disposed in the holder. As in the case of the supporting member 1, the clamp member 2 is preferably of integral formation and consists of a single bar bent so as to constitute the various parts thereof.

In actual use to dispose a broom in the holder it is only necessary to introduce the upper end of the broom-handle between the clamp member 2 and the supporting member 1, said clamp member being moved upwardly to accomplish the above. After the broomhandle has been received between the members 1 and 2 the connection of the spring 12 in its cooperation with the lever 11 will cause the clamp member to positively engage with the broom-handle in a manner which will be obvious. The broom when supported by the holder may be quickly removed from the holder by pulling the lever 11 outward so as to raise the clamp member out of engagement with the broom-handle.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a broom-holder, the combination of a supporting member provided with spaced arms, means for securing the supporting member in position, a clamp member mounted upon the supporting member and comprising spaced arms pivoted to the spaced arms of the said supporting member, an operating-lever carried by the clamp member, and spring means coacting with the operating-lever to hold the clamp member in engaging position.

2. In a broom-holder, the combination of a supporting member provided with spaced arms, means for securing said arms to a wall or like part, a clamp member pivoted to the supporting member, an operating-lever for manipulation of the clamp member, and a stop projected from the clamp member and cooperating with the supporting member for positively limiting the movement of the clamp member.

3. In a broom-holder, the combination of a supporting member having spaced arms,

means for securing the said supporting mem ber in position, a clamp member provided with spaced arms, journals projected from the spaced arms of the clamp member and received in bearings provided in the spaced arms of .the supporting member, and a stop member carried by one of the arms of the clamp member and engaglng an arm of the supporting member aforesaid to limit the movement of the clamp member.

4. In a broom-holder, the combination of a supporting member having spaced arms, means for securing the said supporting member in position, anupwardly-movable clamp member provided with spaced arms, journals projected from the spaced arms of the clamp member and received in bearings provided in the spaced arms of the supporting member, a stop member extended from one of the journals of the clamp member and projected transversely above the supporting member and cooperating with the said supporting member to limit the upward movement of the clamp member, and a lever extended downwardly from the other journal member for manipulation of said clamp member.

5. In a broom-holder, the combination'of a supporting member consisting of spaced arms, supporting-standards projected downwardly from the spaced arms aforesaid,a clamp member mounted upon the supporting member and provided with spaced arms, the supporting member being provided with bearings upon the spaced arms thereof, journals projected from the arms of the clamp members and received by the members in the arms of the supporting member, a stop member extended from one of the journals of the clamp member and adapted to engage the supporting member to limit the movement of said clamp member, a lever projected downwardly from. the other journal of the clamp member, a spring connecting said lever with one of the supporting-standards aforesaid, the outer ends of the spaced arms of the clamp member being connected by a bar adapted to engage an object.
