PATENT OFFICE.
WALL CONSTRUCTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. l780,648, dated January 24, 1905.
Application filed November 24, 1903. Serial No. 182,476.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIS H. FISHER, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in'Wall Construction, of which the followingl is a specification.
My invention relates tothe production of artificial stone for Wall construction; and my first object in producing such abuilding-stone is that it is much cheaper and neater when laid in a wall than the natural stone, and the second object that I have in view in producing a material of the kind is that the inside and outside layers of the Wall are securely bound together bya system of dovetail binders.
Referring now to the'accompanying drawings.Figure l is a longitudinal section of one layer of the artificial blocks, illustrating the manner in which the inside and outside layers are securedtogether. Fig. 2 is a similar section of the wall, disclosing the manner of `iinishing around the windows or doors of a building. Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of a section of the building at the corner, disclosing a corner I-beam, whichmay be used or dispensed with according to the judgment of an architect or an experienced builder. Fig. 4 discloses a section of the corner Yof a building, showing the general construction of the walls.
I will now further proceed to describemy invention by referring to corresponding numerals on the drawings and the specification.
1 illustrates I-beams vertically arranged and of even dimensions to the thickness of the vinside tier of the building-stone 2. Said stones 2 are cast so 'that the ends thereof will correspondingly engage between the iianges of the I-beams and are further provided with dove-v tail-locking extensions 3. Between said veX- rIhe outside tier of the wall construction 5, 6, and 7 is 'cast with a dovetail recess 8 at each end. These recesses when in position correspondingly engage the dovetail eXtensions 3 on the outer portions of the inside sections of the Wall, as indicated.
The wall-construction blocks for building the wall around the openings, such as doors and Windows, are somewhat different from the building material already described.
It will be observed that the inside section of the building-stone fits up square against the window-frame 9, while the outside sections 10 are constructed with the outer corners curved, and in order to make the two sections secure at this point I have provided a dovetail binding-key 11. This key is produced as shown and of a sufficient length to correspond with the thickness of both the inside and outside stones, and when the two stones are laid in place the binding-key 1l is inserted, which will securely hold the walls together around the openings of the building.
I have further provided an I-beam l2, adapted to. secure the ends of the inside sections together at the corners of the building This may, however, be dispensed with without materially impairing the strength of the structure at this point.
Having now fully described` my invention,
' what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
' In a building-wall, having openings therein, the combination of an inner course composed of blocks which are provided with outwardly projecting dovetail lugs, an outer course composed of blocks which have recesses formed to receive the said lugs of the inner course, and binding-keys ll inserted between the courses adjacent the openings inthe wall,
for the purpose set forth. n In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIS H. FISHER.
